{"id":27202,"date":"2018-12-28T10:22:41","date_gmt":"2018-12-28T10:22:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=27202"},"modified":"2018-12-28T10:22:41","modified_gmt":"2018-12-28T10:22:41","slug":"sudan-19-killed-over-200-injured-in-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=27202","title":{"rendered":"Sudan: 19 killed, over 200 injured in protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"128.808295573\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">At least 19 people have been killed in clashes between Sudanese anti-riot police and protesters in demonstrations triggered by a rise in bread prices, according to a government official.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Speaking on state television on Thursday, Boshara Juma, government spokesperson, said: &#8220;Nineteen people lost their lives in the incidents including two from security forces&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">At least 219 others were wounded, he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sudanese authorities had previously said eight people have been killed in clashes in Khartoum and several other cities since the protests began on December 19.<\/p>\n<p>However, rights group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/amnesty-international.html\">Amnesty International<\/a> on Monday put the death toll at 37<\/p>\n<p>Protests initially started in towns and villages and later spread to Khartoum, as people rallied against the government tripling the price of a loaf of bread from one Sudanese pound to three ($0.02 to $0.06).<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrators have also been marching against Sudan&#8217;s dire economic situation and some have called for President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/focus\/2009\/03\/20093485834634368.html\">Omar al-Bashir<\/a>&#8216;s resignation.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors and journalists have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/12\/sudan-journalists-strike-support-protests-181227101202722.html\">launched<\/a> a strike in support of the protests.<\/p>\n<p>Police and security officers remained deployed in several parts of the Sudanese capital on Thursday, but no new demonstrations were held.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Egypt pledges support<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, Egypt&#8217;s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, during a visit to Khartoum on Thursday, voiced support for Bashir and his government saying Cairo was &#8220;confident that Sudan will overcome the present situation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Bashir at the presidential palace, Shoukry said the<span>\u00a0&#8220;stability of Sudan means (the) stability of Egypt&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;Egypt is always ready to support Sudan and the ability of Sudanese people as per the government of Sudan&#8217;s vision and policies,&#8221; said Shoukry, who was visiting the Sudanese capital alongside Cairo&#8217;s intelligence chief General Abbas Kamel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The minister&#8217;s comments were the first remarks by a top regional Arab official in support of Bashir&#8217;s government since protests began.<\/p>\n<p>After the protests erupted, Bashir, who has been in power since a 1989 coup,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/12\/sudan-bashir-vows-reforms-protesters-demand-resignation-181225071852392.html\">vowed<\/a>\u00a0to &#8220;take real reforms&#8221; to tackle the country&#8217;s financial difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>Sudan is grappling with an acute foreign currency crisis, soaring inflation, and shortages of bread and fuel despite the lifting of an economic embargo by the US in October 2017.<\/p>\n<p>But activists and opposition groups continued to call on people to take to the streets again.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We urge the Sudanese people to continue their demonstrations until success is achieved by overthrowing the regime,&#8221; the Sudanese Communist Party said in a statement on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Several members of the party have been arrested by security agents since the protests started.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We also call on all opposition parties to unite and work together to coordinate this movement,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5983616606001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video Fullwidth\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>INSIDE STORY: Is it Sudan&#8217;s version of the Arab Spring?
