{"id":27150,"date":"2018-12-27T23:22:20","date_gmt":"2018-12-27T23:22:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=27150"},"modified":"2018-12-27T23:22:20","modified_gmt":"2018-12-27T23:22:20","slug":"sudan-government-19-killed-over-200-injured-in-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=27150","title":{"rendered":"Sudan government: 19 killed, over 200 injured in protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"126.225228272\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Clashes between Sudanese anti-riot police and protesters in demonstrations against a rise in bread prices have killed 19 people, including two security force personnel, according to the government.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nineteen people lost their lives in the incidents including two from security forces,&#8221; government spokesman Boshara Juma said on state television on Thursday, adding that 219 people were wounded.<\/p>\n<p>Sudanese authorities had previously said that eight people have been killed in clashes in Khartoum and several other cities since the protests began on December 19.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Amnesty International &#8211; a global rights organisation &#8211; has put the death toll at 37.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Earlier on Thursday, a network of Sudanese journalists started a strike in the wake of deadly protests sparked by an increase in bread prices.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We declare a three-day strike from December 27 to protest against the violence unleashed by the government against demonstrators,&#8221; said the Sudanese Journalists&#8217; Network, which advocates free speech,\u00a0<span>on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The independent network said the strike was also a protest against authorities&#8217; &#8220;barbaric&#8221; assault on press freedoms, including censorship and confiscating newspaper editions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Journalists in <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/sudan.html\">Sudan<\/a> frequently complain of harassment from the authorities, and the African country has a dire rating on international press freedom rankings.<\/p>\n<p>Entire print runs of newspapers are often confiscated over articles deemed offensive by the powerful National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), which is spearheading the ongoing crackdown on protesters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/12\/doctors-strike-continues-sudan-protests-enter-eighth-day-181226171713677.html\">Doctors<\/a> have already been on a strike since Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Activists and opposition groups have called on people to take to the streets again over the next few days.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We urge the Sudanese people to continue their demonstrations until success is achieved by overthrowing the regime,&#8221; the Sudanese Communist Party said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Several members of the party have been arrested by security agents since the protests started.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We also call on all opposition parties to unite and work together to coordinate this movement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Protests initially started in towns and villages and later spread to Khartoum, as people rallied against the government tripling the price of a loaf of bread from one Sudanese pound to three ($0.02 to $0.06).<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrators have also been marching against Sudan&#8217;s dire economic situation and some have called for the president&#8217;s resignation.<\/p>\n<p>After the protests erupted, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/focus\/2009\/03\/20093485834634368.html\">President Omar al-Bashir<\/a>, who has been in power since a 1989 coup, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/12\/sudan-bashir-vows-reforms-protesters-demand-resignation-181225071852392.html\">vowed<\/a> to &#8220;take real reforms&#8221; to tackle the country&#8217;s financial difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>Sudan is facing an acute foreign currency crisis and soaring inflation despite the lifting of an economic embargo by Washington in October 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The rate of inflation is as high as 70 percent and the Sudanese pound has plunged, while shortages of bread and fuel have regularly hit several cities.<\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5983616606001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video Fullwidth\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>Is it Sudan&#8217;s version of the Arab Spring?
