{"id":27046,"date":"2018-12-27T01:22:46","date_gmt":"2018-12-27T01:22:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=27046"},"modified":"2018-12-27T01:22:46","modified_gmt":"2018-12-27T01:22:46","slug":"israel-advances-plans-for-nearly-2200-settler-homes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=27046","title":{"rendered":"Israel &#8216;advances plans&#8217; for nearly 2,200 settler homes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"106.672946102\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Israeli authorities have advanced plans for nearly 2,200 settlement homes in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/occupied-west-bank.html\">occupied West Bank<\/a>, an NGO and Israeli media said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>A defence ministry committee with responsibility for such projects on Tuesday and Wednesday approved the plans, the settlement watchdog Peace Now said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>It said 1,159 housing units were given final approvals before building permits can be issued, while 1,032 were at an earlier stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Times of Israel website also reported the development, saying i<span>n total\u00a02,191 settlement homes are expected to be advanced this week.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It is the first such approvals since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/12\/israel-hold-early-elections-april-181224122527714.html\">snap polls were called<\/a> earlier this week, after the ruling right-wing government led by Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/benjamin-netanyahu.html\"><span>Benjamin Netanyahu<\/span><\/a> collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Netanyahu agreed to dissolve parliament and call for early elections on April 9.<\/p>\n<h2>Netanyahu meets settler leaders\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The settlements, which play an important role in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/israel.html\">Israel<\/a>&#8216;s right-wing politics, have\u00a0<span>surged under Netanyahu.\u00a0<\/span>Earlier on Wednesday, he met settler leaders in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/city\/jerusalem.html\">Jerusalem<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;We&#8217;ll see an attempt by the left-wing to overthrow our rule with the help of the media and others,&#8221; he said, speaking of the elections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;They can&#8217;t succeed, because if they do &#8211; that will pose a clear danger to the settlement movement.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Israeli settlements have also long been viewed as a major roadblock to a viable Palestinian state. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>They are\u00a0<\/span>considered a violation of international law and major stumbling blocks to peace efforts as they are built on land the Palestinian leaders want for their future state including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/east-jerusalem.html\">occupied East Jerusalem<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More than 400,000 Israelis live in West Bank <a href=\"https:\/\/interactive.aljazeera.com\/aje\/2017\/50-years-illegal-settlements\/index.html\">settlements<\/a>, which range in size from tiny hamlets to large towns.
