ISIL said three people were killed in the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Tal Afar, about 80km west of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/city\/mosul.html\">Mosul<\/a>, experienced cycles of sectarian violence after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-states.html\">United States<\/a>-led invasion of<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/iraq.html\">Iraq<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>in 2003, and produced some of ISIL&#8217;s most senior commanders.<\/p>\n<p>The city, which had about 200,000 residents, came under ISIL control when the armed group overran swaths of<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Iraq<\/span>&#8216;s north in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>It was taken back by\u00a0<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Iraq<\/span>i security forces, backed by the US-led coalition, in August 2017, the last area to be reclaimed from ISIL in the north before fighting moved to the Syrian border.<\/p>\n<p>A heavy security presence has remained since then and the city has been mostly quiet. Tuesday&#8217;s attack<span>\u00a0was the first one in Tal Afar since Iraqi forces retook the city from ISIL.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>ISIL declared a caliphate in 2014 after seizing large swaths of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/syria.html\">Syria<\/a> and Iraq, establishing its de facto capital in the Syrian city of Raqqa.<\/p>\n<p>However, the group has lost all their strongholds and the vast majority of the territory it controlled since then.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A car bomb attack in the northern Iraqi city of Tal Afar has killed two people and wounded 11, according to the Iraqi military.
