The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of lack of authorisation to discuss the call publicly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/12\/canadian-court-releases-huawei-meng-wanzhou-bail-181211230419330.html\">Meng Wanzhou<\/a>, chief financial officer of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, was arrested in Canada on December 1 at the request of the US, which wants her extradited to face charges that she and her company misled banks about the company&#8217;s business dealings in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/iran.html\">Iran<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nine days later, the Chinese detained Canadian ex-diplomat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/12\/detained-canadian-china-probed-harming-national-security-181212171440771.html\">Michael Kovrig<\/a> and Canadian entrepreneur <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/12\/michael-spavor-china-investigates-canadian-181213051229927.html\">Michael Spavor <\/a>on vague allegations of &#8220;engaging in activities that endanger the national security&#8221; of China.<\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5979867811001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1.5\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"4.5\">\n<td readability=\"6\">\n<p>US, Canada hold talks amid tension with China over Huawei case<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>Freeland&#8217;s declaration marked a harder tone from Canadian officials. Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/Justin-Trudeau.html\">Justin Trudeau<\/a> had been criticised by the opposition for what they called unacceptable reticence over his suggestion Wednesday that raising demands for their release would be akin to &#8220;to stomping on the table&#8221; without achieving their release.<\/p>\n<p>Freeland said that that Canada is honoring its extradition treaty with the US and said it&#8217;s conducting a fair and transparent legal proceeding with respect to Meng.<\/p>\n<p>US State Department spokesman Robert Palladino also reiterated that Canada is honoring its extradition treaty commitments.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We also express our deep concern for the Chinese Government&#8217;s detention of two Canadians earlier this month and call for their immediate release,&#8221; Palladino said. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also called for their release last week.<\/p>\n<p>UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said in a statement the UK is confident that Canada is respecting its extradition treaty with the US and said he is &#8220;deeply concerned&#8221; that China may have detained the two Canadians for political reasons.<\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5982443182001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"2\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"6\">\n<td readability=\"7\">\n<p>US, allies slam China &#8216;for economic espionage&#8217;, hackers indicted<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>The EU, meanwhile, issued a statement saying, &#8220;The declared motive for the arrest and detention of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, both Canadian nationals, raises concerns about legitimate research and business practices in China.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The show of support from allies is significant for Canada, which has felt relatively isolated in recent months, particularly following US President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/donald-trump.html\">Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s criticism of Trudeau and his lack of public support.<\/p>\n<p>In August, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/saudi-arabia.html\">Saudi Arabia<\/a> expelled Canada&#8217;s ambassador to the kingdom and withdrew its own ambassador after Canada&#8217;s foreign ministry tweeted support for an arrested Saudi activist.<\/p>\n<p>The Saudis also sold Canadian investments and ordered their citizens studying in Canada to leave.<\/p>\n<p>No country, including the US, spoke out publicly in support of Canada, and the Trump administration has been steadfast in its support for Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canada has moved away from diplomatic caution and made its first formal demand for China to immediately release two Canadians who have been detained in apparent retaliation for Canada&#8217;s arrest of a top Chinese tech executive.
