{"id":26288,"date":"2018-12-20T16:24:05","date_gmt":"2018-12-20T16:24:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=26288"},"modified":"2018-12-20T16:24:05","modified_gmt":"2018-12-20T16:24:05","slug":"un-report-finds-women-migrants-in-libya-often-face-gang-rape","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=26288","title":{"rendered":"UN report finds women migrants in Libya often face gang rape"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"66\">\n<p>\nKHARTOUM:\u00a0A university student was killed in protests in the Sudanese city of Al-Qadarif on Thursday, a member of parliament said.<br \/>&#8220;The situation in Al-Qadarif has become dangerous and the protests have developed to include fires and theft and it&#8217;s now out of control,&#8221; said lawmaker Mubarak Al-Nur.<br \/>Protests that started in the city of Atbara in northeastern Sudan on Wednesday spread to Al-Qadarif as well as the capital Khartoum and other cities on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\nEarlier on Thursday, thousands of protesters in Atbara city in northeastern Sudan rallied against rising food prices and corruption, chanting anti-government slogans and setting fire to car tires as police tried to disperse them with tear gas.<br \/>Economic conditions in Sudan have deteriorated sharply in recent months. A decision to reduce bread subsidies earlier this year sparked rare nationwide protests after prices doubled. Inflation now stands at 69 percent and severe shortages of fuel and bread have forced people in the capital and other cities to queue at bakeries and petrol stations.<br \/>At a demonstration in Atbara attended by hundreds on Wednesday, protesters set fire to the local headquarters of the ruling party, prompting the government to declare a state of emergency and a curfew.<br \/>\u201cI went out to protest because life has stopped in Atbara,\u201d a 36-year-old man, who had participated in Wednesday\u2019s demonstration and asked not to be named, told Reuters on Thursday.<br \/>He said he had not been able to buy bread for four days because it was no longer available in the shops.<br \/>\u201cPrices have increased and I have still not been able to withdraw my November salary &#8230; because of the liquidity crisis. These are difficult conditions that we can\u2019t live with, and the government doesn\u2019t care about us.\u201d<br \/>Smaller protests were also held in the cities of Dongola, Sennar and Al-Qadarif on Thursday, residents said. In Dongola, protesters set fire to the local headquarters of the ruling party, and at a local market shop owners closed their stores. In Atbara, historically a center of anti-government protests, protesters who used scarfs to cover their faces chanted \u201cfreedom\u201d and set car tires alight.<br \/>\u201cProtesters are walking in most of the city\u2019s streets,\u201d a Reuters witness in Atbara said. \u201cThey are chanting against corruption and expensive prices and asking for freedom, peace and justice.\u201d<br \/>Sudan\u2019s economy was hit hard when the south of the country seceded in 2011.
