{"id":26140,"date":"2018-12-19T16:23:20","date_gmt":"2018-12-19T16:23:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=26140"},"modified":"2018-12-19T16:23:20","modified_gmt":"2018-12-19T16:23:20","slug":"drc-election-governor-bans-campaigning-in-capital-kinshasa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=26140","title":{"rendered":"DRC election: Governor bans campaigning in capital Kinshasa"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"133.518918919\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">The governor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/democratic-republic-congo.html\">Democratic Republic of Congo<\/a>&#8216;s capital, Kinshasa, has banned campaigning in the city ahead of Sunday&#8217;s presidential vote for security reasons, a move denounced by the opposition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Andre Kimbuta, a member of the ruling coalition, announced his decision on Wednesday following crackdowns by security forces on opposition supporters last week that killed at least seven people and <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/12\/fire-destroys-thousands-voting-machines-dr-congo-181213072729736.html\">caused a fire<\/a> that destroyed thousands of voting machines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;The information in our possession attests that in all the political camps of the main presidential candidates, extremists have prepared and are preparing for a street confrontation in the city of Kinshasa during election campaign activities,&#8221; Kimbuta said in a statement, without elaborating.<\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5981046027001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>DRC&#8217;s new electronic machines &#8216;could help rig election&#8217;<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>The long-delayed election is meant to choose a successor for President\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/joseph-kabila.html\">Joseph Kabila<\/a><span>, who is due to step down after 18 years in power. If successful, it would be the DRC&#8217;s first democratic transfer of power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Kinshasa is an opposition stronghold, where security forces killed dozens of people during protests against Kabila&#8217;s refusal to step down when his mandate officially expired two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Campaigning is due to end at midnight on Friday in the race between Kabila&#8217;s preferred successor, Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, and two main challengers, Felix Tshisekedi and Martin Fayulu.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>&#8216;Regime&#8217;s fear&#8217;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Fayulu had scheduled a rally in Kinshasa on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Kimbuta&#8217;s only objective is to prevent Martin Fayulu&#8217;s rally. This hasty cancellation, while the crowd is already mobilised, is dangerous and shows the regime&#8217;s fear,&#8221; Moise Katumbi, a Fayulu supporter, wrote on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition leaders say the government is trying to rig the results in Shadary&#8217;s favour with new electronic voting machines and falsified voter registrations. The government denies it has engaged in fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Kimbuta said the only way presidential candidates could campaign in Kinshasa would be through the media, where Shadary has a clear advantage due to sizeable campaign funds and state or ruling party control of many media outlets.<\/p>\n<p>However, a rare national opinion poll in October showed Tshisekedi leading the race at 36 percent, well ahead of Shadary&#8217;s 16 percent.
