{"id":25910,"date":"2018-12-17T20:23:31","date_gmt":"2018-12-17T20:23:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=25910"},"modified":"2018-12-17T20:23:31","modified_gmt":"2018-12-17T20:23:31","slug":"62-al-shabab-fighters-killed-in-somalia-air-raids-us-army","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=25910","title":{"rendered":"62 al-Shabab fighters killed in Somalia air raids: US army"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"108.338541667\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">The US military said it killed 62 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/al-shabab.html\">al-Shabab<\/a> fighters in six air raids last weekend in the vicinity of Gandarsh in Somalia&#8217;s south-central Banaadir province.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The military&#8217;s Africa Command (Africom) said on Monday that four attacks were carried out on Saturday, killing 34 fighters, and two more on Sunday, which killed 28.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;Africa Command and our Somali partners conducted these air strikes to prevent terrorists from using remote areas as a safe haven to plot, direct, inspire and recruit for future attacks,&#8221; Africom said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The air attacks, among the deadliest this year, did not kill any civilians, the statement said. &#8220;At this time we assess these air strikes did not injure or kill any civilians.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Major attack<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5860288109001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1.5\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"4.5\">\n<td readability=\"6\">\n<p>Somalia: At least 20 killed in Mogadishu explosions, gunfire<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>The US air strikes were aimed at al-Shabab fighters who were preparing a major attack on a Somali government military base in the Lower Shabelle region, a Somali intelligence official, who insisted on anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media, told The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-states.html\">United States<\/a> carries out regular air raids in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/somalia.html\">Somalia<\/a> in support of a UN-backed government there, which has been fighting against an al-Shabab rebellion for years.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the US military said it had killed 37 fighters from the al-Qaeda-linked group.<\/p>\n<p><span>The air raids bring to 45 the number of strikes the Pentagon has conducted against al-Shabab so far in 2018, military spokesman Colonel Rob Manning said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Last year, the figure was 35.
