{"id":25490,"date":"2018-12-14T00:23:40","date_gmt":"2018-12-14T00:23:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=25490"},"modified":"2018-12-14T00:23:40","modified_gmt":"2018-12-14T00:23:40","slug":"un-investigation-delves-into-daeshs-crimes-against-yazidis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=25490","title":{"rendered":"UN investigation delves into Daesh\u2019s crimes against Yazidis"},"content":{"rendered":"<div itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-io-article-url=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1420426\/middle-east\" readability=\"93\">\n<p>\nLONDON:\u00a0A UN investigation into atrocities committed against Yazidis and others in Iraq will do more than simply gather information that will molder in an archive, the probe\u2019s leader said on Wednesday, it will help bring perpetrators to justice.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe team, led by British lawyer Karim Asad Ahmad Khan began its work in August, a year after it was approved the UN Security Council.<\/p>\n<p>\nSpeaking on the sidelines of a London event celebrating Yazidi activist Nadia Murad \u2014 who won the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize \u2014\u00a0 Khan said the investigation will get into full gear in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cWe will be pushing forward with greater capacity next year once we have a budget from the United Nations,\u201d he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe investigation aims to collect and preserve evidence of acts by Daesh in Iraq that may be war crimes, crimes against humanity or genocide. In September 2017 \u2014 after a year of talks with Iraq \u2014 the UN council adopted a resolution asking UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to create the team \u201cto support domestic efforts\u201d to hold the militants accountable.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe evidence gathered is primarily for use by Iraqi authorities.<\/p>\n<p>\nWhether that evidence will then be shared with international courts, will \u201cbe determined in agreement with the Government of Iraq on a case-by-case basis,\u201d according to the resolution.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cThis mandate was not created to create simply an archive that would gather dust,\u201d said Khan.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cOur bid is &#8230; to ensure that the best possible evidence is presented, is preserved, is collected. The necessary investigations are committed so that those who committed these horrendous acts are subjected to the vigour of the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nUN experts warned in June 2016 that Daesh was committing genocide against the Yazidis in Syria and Iraq, destroying the minority religious community through killings, sexual slavery and other crimes.<\/p>\n<p>\nSupporters of the Yazidi cause have expressed irritation at delays the probe has faced.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cFour years have passed since the crimes of genocide committed against Yazidis but we have seen no justice as yet for the victims and survivors,\u201d Karwan Tahir, the Kurdish regional government\u2019s representative in Britain told the London event.<\/p>\n<p>\nAbout 7,000 women and girls were captured in northwest Iraq in August 2014 and held by Daesh in Mosul where they were tortured and raped.<\/p>\n<p>\nMurad, a young Yazidi woman who was enslaved and raped by Islamic State fighters in Mosul in 2014, and international human rights lawyer Amal Clooney have long pushed Iraq to allow UN investigators to help.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON:\u00a0A UN investigation into atrocities committed against Yazidis and others in Iraq will do more than simply gather information that will molder in an archive, the probe\u2019s leader said on Wednesday, it will help bring perpetrators to justice.
