Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan<\/a> has said he will start a military operation east of the Euphrates river in northern Syria<\/a> in a “few days”.<\/p>\n

The operation, announced on Wednesday, could further complicate already strained relations with the United States<\/a>, which has troops stationed in the area currently controlled by Kurdish forces.<\/p>\n

“We will start the operation to clear the east of the Euphrates from separatist terrorists in a few days. Our target is never US soldiers,” Erdogan said in a speech televised live.<\/p>\n

“This step will allow for the path to a political solution to be opened and for healthier cooperation.”<\/p>\n

The US is supporting Kurdish forces east of the Euphrates, where People’s Protection Units, or YPG, troops have been fighting against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL<\/a>, also known as ISIS).<\/p>\n

But Ankara recently again voiced frustration about what it says are delays in the implementation of a deal with the US to clear the YPG from the town of Manbij, located west of the Euphrates in YPG-controlled areas.<\/p>\n

Last month, Turkey<\/a> said it wanted the agreement on Manbij to be fully carried out by the end of the year, followed by joint patrols by Turkish and US troops in northern Syria.<\/p>\n

In January, Turkey and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) – an Ankara-backed armed Syrian opposition group –\u00a0launched<\/a>\u00a0what it called Operation Euphrates Shield in the Afrin district<\/a> in northern Syria in an attempt to remove the Kurdish fighters, who it claims are affiliated with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).<\/p>\n

As the\u00a0Syrian war<\/a>\u00a0progressed, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) umbrella organisation gained significant amounts of territory in eastern and northern Syria in its fight against ISIL.<\/p>\n

Turkey, however, sees the territorial expansion as a threat as it has battled with Kurdish separatists who want a state of their own for decades.<\/p>\n

The US support for the SDF infuriated Turkey<\/a> and created an ongoing diplomatic crisis between the two\u00a0NATO<\/a>\u00a0allies.<\/span><\/p>\n

That relation was further damaged by Turkey’s imprisonment of an American pastor<\/a> and a tepid response by the US to the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi<\/a> in the Saudi consulate in Turkey.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
