{"id":24991,"date":"2018-12-10T14:24:06","date_gmt":"2018-12-10T14:24:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=24991"},"modified":"2018-12-10T14:24:06","modified_gmt":"2018-12-10T14:24:06","slug":"uk-government-set-to-postpone-parliamentary-vote-on-brexit-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=24991","title":{"rendered":"UK government set to postpone parliamentary vote on Brexit deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"138.592487194\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">British Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/theresa.html\">Theresa May<\/a> will make a statement to parliament on Monday amid speculation that the government will postpone a so-called &#8220;meaningful vote&#8221; on her widely unpopular Brexit deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>May was touted to face a major defeat in the vote, which was scheduled for Tuesday evening in the lower chamber House of Commons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">She <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CommonsLeader\/status\/1072101585227038720\" target=\"_blank\">will<\/a> now make a statement to the Commons at 15:30 GMT on Monday, according to the Speaker&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Local media reports, citing several anonymous government sources, said she will announce that the Brexit vote has been pulled during her speech.<\/p>\n<p>A move to delay the vote could provide May with a\u00a0window of opportunity to go back to Brussels and push for revised terms of departure from the bloc.<\/p>\n<p>But a spokesperson for the European Commission said earlier on Monday the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/european-union.html\">European Union<\/a> had already offered Britain the &#8220;best and only possible&#8221; Brexit deal and would not renegotiate a withdrawal agreement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our position has not changed and as far as we&#8217;re concerned the United Kingdom is leaving the European Union on the 29th of March, 2019,&#8221; spokesperson Mina Andreeva said.<\/p>\n<h2>Widely unpopular withdrawal plan<\/h2>\n<p>The vote was due to see parliamentarians decide on the EU withdrawal agreement and a declaration on future relations, reached by May and European leaders following months of back-and-forth negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>A simple majority was required for approval.<\/p>\n<p>The withdrawal plan includes provisions on citizens&#8217; rights, the transition period and the so-called backstop arrangement concerning the Irish border, among other issues.<\/p>\n<p>The declaration on a framework for future relations, meanwhile, sets out how the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-kingdom.html\">United Kingdom<\/a> and EU will work together after Brexit in areas such as trade and security.<\/p>\n<p>But scores of May&#8217;s ruling Conservative Party MPs were expected to reject her proposal, while several opposition parties, including the main opposition Labour Party, also said they would refuse to back it.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Labour Party leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/jeremy-corbyn.html\">Jeremy Corbyn<\/a> accused May of continuing to &#8220;botch Brexit&#8221; in the wake of speculation about the vote on her proposed divorce deal being pulled.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have known for at least two weeks that Theresa May&#8217;s worst of all worlds deal was going to be rejected by Parliament because it is damaging for Britain,&#8221;\u00a0Corbyn <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jeremycorbyn\/status\/1072110751551234048\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> in a statement posted on Facebook and Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Instead, she ploughed ahead when she should have gone back to Brussels to renegotiate or called an election so the public could elect a new government that could do so,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text_exposed_show\">&#8220;We don&#8217;t have a functioning government &#8230;\u00a0<\/span>our public services are at breaking point and our communities suffer from dire under-investment. Labour&#8217;s alternative plan for a jobs first deal must take centre stage in any future talks with Brussels.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>ECJ Brexit ruling<\/h2>\n<p>May&#8217;s scheduled speech to parliament will come hours after the European Union&#8217;s top court ruled that Britain may unilaterally reverse its decision to leave the bloc.<\/p>\n<p>In a judgment delivered earlier on Monday morning, the European Court of Justice said the UK could revoke Article 50 &#8211; the exit clause in the EU&#8217;s constitution &#8211; &#8220;in accordance with its own national constitutional requirements&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Such a revocation \u2026 would have the effect that the United Kingdom remains in the EU under terms that are unchanged as regards its status as a Member State,&#8221; the court said.<\/p>\n<p>The UK is due to leave the EU on March 29 next year, two years after it triggered Article 50 and kick-started negotiations with European leaders over a divorce deal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>British Prime Minister Theresa May will make a statement to parliament on Monday amid speculation that the government will postpone a so-called &#8220;meaningful vote&#8221; on her widely unpopular Brexit deal.
