Afghanistan<\/span>‘s\u00a0attorney general has suspended the head of the Afghan\u00a0Football\u00a0<\/span>Federation after a probe into allegations of sexual abuse of members of the national women’s\u00a0football\u00a0<\/span>team.<\/p>\n

President Ashraf Ghani<\/a> ordered an investigation after Britain’s Guardian newspaper reported last week that senior figures linked to the Afghan women’s team alleged some players had been molested by federation officials.<\/p>\n

Jamshid Rasouli, a spokesman for the attorney general, said on Sunday that six officials had been suspended following a recommendation from the team set up to investigate.<\/p>\n

According to the Guardian, the alleged abuses took place ins the federation’s headquarters in\u00a0Afghanistan<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>as well as at a training camp in Jordan last February.<\/p>\n

Ghani called the allegations “shocking and unacceptable to all Afghans”.<\/p>\n

An Afghan official said Keramuddin Keram, the powerful head of the Afghan\u00a0Football\u00a0<\/span>Federation, and five others had been suspended and that the investigation was still ongoing.<\/p>\n

Officials representing Keram did not immediately respond to phone calls and text messages seeking comment.<\/p>\n

‘Zero tolerance’<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Afghan\u00a0Football\u00a0<\/span>Federation issued a statement calling the allegations “groundless” and said it would fully cooperate with any probe.<\/p>\n

When the accusations first surfaced, a spokesman at FIFA, the world\u00a0football\u00a0<\/span>federation, said it had a “zero tolerance” policy on abuse and was looking into the Afghan case.<\/p>\n

In the Guardian story, the former head of the women’s football department Khalida Popal, together with team coach Kelly Lindsey and players Mina Ahmadi and Shabnam Mobarez accused federation officials of abuse.<\/p>\n
