{"id":24865,"date":"2018-12-09T17:23:32","date_gmt":"2018-12-09T17:23:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=24865"},"modified":"2018-12-09T17:23:32","modified_gmt":"2018-12-09T17:23:32","slug":"afghanistan-suspends-football-officials-amid-abuse-allegations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=24865","title":{"rendered":"Afghanistan suspends football officials amid abuse allegations"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"101.77190254\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">Afghanistan<\/span>&#8216;s\u00a0attorney general has suspended the head of the Afghan<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Football\u00a0<\/span>Federation after a probe into allegations of sexual abuse of members of the national women&#8217;s<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0football\u00a0<\/span>team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/ashraf-ghani.html\">Ashraf Ghani<\/a> ordered an investigation after Britain&#8217;s Guardian newspaper reported last week that senior figures linked to the Afghan women&#8217;s team alleged some players had been molested by federation officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Jamshid Rasouli, a spokesman for the attorney general, said on Sunday that six officials had been suspended following a recommendation from the team set up to investigate.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Guardian, the alleged abuses took place ins the federation&#8217;s headquarters in<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/afghanistan.html\">Afghanistan<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>as well as at a training camp in Jordan last February.<\/p>\n<p>Ghani called the allegations &#8220;shocking and unacceptable to all Afghans&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>An Afghan official said Keramuddin Keram, the powerful head of the Afghan<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Football\u00a0<\/span>Federation, and five others had been suspended and that the investigation was still ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>Officials representing Keram did not immediately respond to phone calls and text messages seeking comment.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>&#8216;Zero tolerance&#8217;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Afghan<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Football\u00a0<\/span>Federation issued a statement calling the allegations &#8220;groundless&#8221; and said it would fully cooperate with any probe.<\/p>\n<p>When the accusations first surfaced, a spokesman at FIFA, the world<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0football\u00a0<\/span>federation, said it had a &#8220;zero tolerance&#8221; policy on abuse and was looking into the Afghan case.<\/p>\n<p>In the Guardian story, the former head of the women&#8217;s football department Khalida Popal, together with team coach Kelly Lindsey and players Mina Ahmadi and Shabnam Mobarez accused federation officials of abuse.<\/p>\n<p>Ranked as one of the most dangerous countries for women, allegations of sexual contact outside marriage can have deadly consequences in<span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Afghanistan<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Victims of sexual harassment are often extremely reluctant to come forward for fear they will be accused of adultery.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Afghanistan&#8217;s\u00a0attorney general has suspended the head of the Afghan\u00a0Football\u00a0Federation after a probe into allegations of sexual abuse of members of the national women&#8217;s\u00a0football\u00a0team.
