{"id":24632,"date":"2018-12-07T09:23:27","date_gmt":"2018-12-07T09:23:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=24632"},"modified":"2018-12-07T09:23:27","modified_gmt":"2018-12-07T09:23:27","slug":"refugee-ship-aquarius-to-stop-rescue-mission-in-the-mediterranean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=24632","title":{"rendered":"Refugee ship Aquarius to stop rescue mission in the Mediterranean"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"120.971633518\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Rescue and relief organisations SOS Mediterranee and Doctors Without Borders (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/inpictures\/msf-run-hospital-offers-3d-printed-prostheses-war-wounded-181203162342489.html\">MSF<\/a>) have decided to stop the Aquarius refugee rescue mission in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/mediterranean.html\">Mediterranean<\/a> Sea after what it calls &#8220;a relentless ongoing political, judicial and administrative campaign backed by several European states&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The decision, made public late on Thursday evening, was made after the Aquarius had to remain in port for the last two months following allegations of breaking the law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;Repeated and targeted attacks against life-saving aid organizations, coupled with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/european-union.html\">EU<\/a> states&#8217; criminal disregard of their maritime and international obligations, lead to mounting life-threatening risks for people,&#8221; Director of SOS Mediterranee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/germany.html\">Germany<\/a> Verena Papke said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Aquarius has helped in filling void in the Mediterranean and now the repeated unacceptable attacks resulted in stopping it,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today, search and rescue at sea is nearly non-existent, portraying the failure of Europe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"5.60526315789\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\u26a1\ufe0fBreaking news\u26a1\ufe0fEnd of Aquarius charter for prompt resumption of search and rescue missions. In June, Italy&#8217;s new Interior Minister Matteo Salvini\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/opinion\/aquarius-refugee-ship-crisis-180617091028528.html\">blocked the Aquarius<\/a>, carrying 629 refugees and migrants, from docking at its ports.<\/p>\n<p>The move by the far-right leader, who is also a co-deputy prime minister, caused a public outcry with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/thousands-rally-paris-support-migrant-rescue-ship-aquarius-181007102711370.html\">thousands in France taking part in rallies<\/a>\u00a0to express their anger at the efforts to stop the last migrant rescue ship operating off Libya&#8217;s coast.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, the ship sailed to Spain where the refugees were allowed to disembark.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Italian authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/11\/italy-orders-seizure-migrant-rescue-ship-aquarius-msf-181120082930731.html\">ordered the ship to be seized<\/a> after an accusation that the vessel was being used to illegally dump toxic waste at ports in southern Italy.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the ship remained docked in the French port city of Marseille.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inpage-embed article-guid\" data-guid=\"181114144641204\"><a class=\"inpage-embed-article ProgrammeEpisode\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/programmes\/peopleandpower\/2018\/11\/rescue-sea-migrants-mediterranean-181114144641204.html\">Rescue at Sea: Migrants in the Mediterranean<\/a><\/div>\n<p>SOS Mediterranee called that action a &#8220;politically driven attack&#8221; and said all rules were followed and the Italian authorities never raised an alarm over the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the decision to no longer operate the Aquarius, SOS Mediterranee said it was looking at new options regarding rescue missions in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ending operations of the Aquarius vessel was an extremely difficult decision to make, but one that will enable our teams to resume search and rescue work as soon as possible,&#8221; the organisation said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As long as people will continue attempting the most dangerous sea crossing in the world, SOS MEDITERRANEE will fulfil its maritime duty, responding to the emergency by all professional means possible,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We refuse to remain idle on shore as people continue to die at sea.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rescue and relief organisations SOS Mediterranee and Doctors Without Borders (MSF) have decided to stop the Aquarius refugee rescue mission in the Mediterranean Sea after what it calls &#8220;a relentless ongoing political, judicial and administrative campaign backed by several European states&#8221;.
