{"id":24339,"date":"2018-12-05T00:22:39","date_gmt":"2018-12-05T00:22:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=24339"},"modified":"2018-12-05T00:22:39","modified_gmt":"2018-12-05T00:22:39","slug":"turkey-detains-dozens-nationwide-over-alleged-gulen-links","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=24339","title":{"rendered":"Turkey detains dozens nationwide over alleged Gulen links"},"content":{"rendered":"<div itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-io-article-url=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1415706\/middle-east\" readability=\"90\">\n<p>\nANKARA: Turkish police on Tuesday detained nearly 140 people in nationwide raids over alleged links to the group blamed for the 2016 failed coup, state media reported.<\/p>\n<p>\nProsecutors across the country issued 267 arrest warrants, according to state news agency Anadolu, as part of different investigations into followers of US-based Turkish preacher Fethullah Gulen.<\/p>\n<p>\nPolice launched operations in 24 provinces including Izmir and Mugla on the Aegean coast and Ordu and Zonguldak on the Black Sea.<\/p>\n<p>\nBy Tuesday morning, 137 suspects had been detained including 55 in Istanbul, Anadolu reported. Ankara accuses Gulen of ordering the attempted overthrow of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on July 15, 2016 but he strongly denies the claims.<\/p>\n<p>\nGulen, who lives in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania, stressed that his movement is peaceful, promoting Islam and education.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe probes include one led by the Istanbul public prosecutor into the movement \u2014 referred to as the \u201cFethullah Terrorist Organization\u201d (FETO) \u2014 and businesses linked to Gulen. The prosecutor issued 96 detention warrants, Anadolu said.<\/p>\n<p>\nMeanwhile, prosecutors in the Turkish capital sought the arrest of 48 individuals over their alleged use of an encrypted messaging application called ByLock, which Turkish officials claim was especially created for Gulen supporters.<\/p>\n<p>\nSo far, 35 people including engineers, civil servants and individuals working in the private education sector have been detained in Ankara, the agency reported.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe investigations that led to Tuesday\u2019s raids also focused on Gulen followers\u2019 presence and actions inside the military.<\/p>\n<p>\nSome of the suspects wanted were soldiers on active duty or sacked military personnel.<\/p>\n<p>\nAnother 16 suspects were charged by an Istanbul court of \u201cbeing a member of an armed terrorist organization,\u201d Anadolu reported on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\nTens of thousands of people have been arrested over suspected Gulen links since 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\nDespite criticism from activists and Ankara\u2019s Western allies expressing concern over the scale of the crackdown, the raids show no sign of slowing down.<\/p>\n<p>\nTurkish officials insist that the operations are necessary to remove the \u201cvirus\u201d that is the Gulen movement\u2019s infiltration of key Turkish institutions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ANKARA: Turkish police on Tuesday detained nearly 140 people in nationwide raids over alleged links to the group blamed for the 2016 failed coup, state media reported.
