{"id":24297,"date":"2018-12-04T16:23:37","date_gmt":"2018-12-04T16:23:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=24297"},"modified":"2018-12-04T16:23:37","modified_gmt":"2018-12-04T16:23:37","slug":"saudi-arabia-refuses-to-engage-in-wto-dispute-brought-by-qatar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=24297","title":{"rendered":"Saudi Arabia refuses to engage in WTO dispute brought by Qatar"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"98.2682547903\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/saudi-arabia.html\">Saudi Arabia<\/a> told the World Trade Organisation on Tuesday that national security concerns meant it &#8220;simply will not engage in dispute settlement procedures&#8221; in an intellectual property complaint by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/qatar.html\">Qatar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Qatar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/qatar-bein-seeks-1bn-compensation-saudi-tv-sport-piracy-181001140108546.html\">launched<\/a>\u00a0the dispute in October saying Saudi Arabia was blocking Qatari-owned broadcaster beIN and refusing to take effective action against the piracy of its content by a sophisticated operation called &#8220;beoutQ&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">BeoutQ, a 10-channel system broadcasting to the Middle East on the Arabsat satellite operator, is allegedly being transmitted from Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p><span>BeIN Media Group, the Doha-based sports network that holds exclusive rights to broadcast all major international sports events to the MENA region,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/08\/qatar-bein-calls-saudi-shut-pirate-channel-170831110326498.html\"><span>has claimed beoutQ is stealing its signal<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and broadcasting it as its own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The piracy row between Doha and Riyadh\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/06\/bein-fifa-mulls-legal-action-beoutq-pirate-enablers-180616071743687.html\"><span>escalated during the FIFA World Cup<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in Russia in June, when beoutQ illegally distributed football matches in the Middle East.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>FIFA, football&#8217;s governing body, said in July it had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/07\/fifa-legal-action-beoutq-piracy-row-widens-180712054109435.html\"><span>engaged counsel<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to take legal action in Saudi Arabia and urged Saudi authorities to help in &#8220;the fight against piracy&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Other sports federations also issued similar statements, condemning beoutQ&#8217;s pirated coverage in the MENA region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On June 5, 2017, Saudi Arabia &#8211; alongside fellow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/gcc.html\">Gulf Cooperation Council<\/a> (GCC) countries Bahrain and the UAE, as well as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/egypt.html\">Egypt<\/a>\u00a0imposed a sea, air and land blockade on Qatar, accusing it of supporting terrorism and destabilising the region, allegations Doha has consistently denied.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/08\/qatar-files-wto-complaint-trade-boycott-170801065836035.html\"><span>Qatar first turned to the WTO<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in August 2017 with a wide-ranging complaint to challenge the trade boycott by the blockading nations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, representatives of the United States, Egypt and Bahrain supported the Saudi position at a WTO dispute settlement meeting, while the European Union and Turkish diplomats spoke up in support of Qatar, a Geneva trade official said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE:<br \/>\n            <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Saudi Arabia told the World Trade Organisation on Tuesday that national security concerns meant it &#8220;simply will not engage in dispute settlement procedures&#8221; in an intellectual property complaint by\u00a0Qatar.
