{"id":24205,"date":"2018-12-04T01:26:40","date_gmt":"2018-12-04T01:26:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=24205"},"modified":"2018-12-04T01:26:40","modified_gmt":"2018-12-04T01:26:40","slug":"egypt-refuses-to-name-suspects-in-giulio-regeni-killing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=24205","title":{"rendered":"Egypt refuses to name suspects in Giulio Regeni killing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"94.0816888481\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Prosecutors in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/egypt.html\">Egypt<\/a> have rejected an Italian request to name several policemen as suspects in the <a href=\"http:\/\/america.aljazeera.com\/articles\/2016\/2\/4\/body-of-italian-student-shows-evidence-of-torture-say-egyptian-officials.html\">murder of Giulio Regeni<\/a>, a 28-year-old PhD student who was killed in Cairo in January 2016, local media reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">P<span>rosecutors said\u00a0<\/span>there was no concrete evidence to convict and incarcerate the policemen, according to Egypt&#8217;s official news agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Egyptian authorities previously turned down a similar request by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/italy.html\">Italy<\/a> a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Charges should be based on evidence and not suspicions,&#8221; Egypt&#8217;s State Information Service said in a statement released late on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Egyptian and Italian public prosecutors met in Cairo on Wednesday to discuss the investigations into Regeni&#8217;s case, it said, quoting a judicial source.<\/p>\n<p>The Italian prosecutors asked their Egyptian counterparts &#8220;to approve the inclusion of a number of Egyptian policemen on its register of suspects in Italy&#8221;, it added.<\/p>\n<p>The policemen are suspected by Italian prosecutors of gathering information about Regeni, according to the source.<\/p>\n<p>Despite months of cooperation between Egyptian and Italian prosecutors, no one has been arrested or charged over the killing. Italy is pressing Egypt to speed up the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Regeni&#8217;s body was found, several days after he was killed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/2017\/01\/killed-giulio-regeni-170129080239822.html\">bearing signs of extensive torture<\/a>\u00a0which activists and rights groups say is common in Egyptian detention facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Egyptian authorities have denied involvement in his death and initially suggested Regeni died in a traffic accident.
