{"id":24111,"date":"2018-12-03T08:24:25","date_gmt":"2018-12-03T08:24:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=24111"},"modified":"2018-12-03T08:24:25","modified_gmt":"2018-12-03T08:24:25","slug":"qatar-to-withdraw-from-opec-in-january-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=24111","title":{"rendered":"Qatar to withdraw from OPEC in January 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"147.815704659\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/qatar.html\">Qatar<\/a>\u00a0will withdraw from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), the Gulf nation&#8217;s Energy Minister\u00a0Saad Sherida al-Kaabi\u00a0announced on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>The decision to quit the bloc of 15 oil-producing countries that account for about 40 percent of the world&#8217;s oil production was confirmed by Qatar Petroleum, the country&#8217;s state oil company.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-partner=\"tweetdeck\" readability=\"5.46961325967\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Qatar announces it was withdrawing from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries \u201cOPEC\u201d effective 1 January 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Qatar Petroleum (@qatarpetroleum) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/qatarpetroleum\/status\/1069474817592590336?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 3, 2018<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Speaking at a news conference in Doha, al-Kaabi said: &#8220;T<span>he withdrawal decision reflects Qatar&#8217;s desire to focus its efforts on plans to develop and increase its natural gas production from 77 million tonnes per year to 110 million tonnes in the coming years.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>Qatar is the first Gulf country to leave the bloc of oil-producing countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Al Jazeera correspondent Charlotte Bellis said that Qatar made the decision just days ahead of a December 6 OPEC meeting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They say it has nothing to do with the blockade on Qatar and that they have been thinking about it for several months now,&#8221; Bellis said, reffering to a diplomatic blockade on Qatar by<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/saudi-arabia.html\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>,<span>\u00a0the United Arab Emirates (<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-arab-emirates.html\"> UAE <\/a> <span>),\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/egypt.html\">Egypt<\/a><span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/bahrain.html\">Bahrain<\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They also said that if you want to withdraw from OPEC it had to be done before the end of the year,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They said they wanted to do this now and be transparant ahead of a December 6 OPEC meeting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Since 2013, the amount of oil Qatar produced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opec.org\/opec_web\/static_files_project\/media\/downloads\/publications\/AR%202017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">has steadily declined<\/a> from about 728,000 barrels per day in 2013 to\u00a0<span>about 607.000 barrels per day in 2017, or\u00a0<span>just under 2 percent of OPEC&#8217;s total output.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Meanwhile, total production during the same period increased from 30.7 million barrels per day to 32.4 million barrels per day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Qatar joined OPEC in 1961, one year after the organisation&#8217;s establishment.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, OPEC and Russia, who together produce about 40 percent of the world&#8217;s oil, said they agreed on new oil production cuts to ensure the oil price does not drop too much in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p>In October, the oil price reached a four-year high of $86, but since then the price has dropped again to about $60 per barrel.<\/p>\n<h2>North Field<\/h2>\n<p>Qatar is the world&#8217;s biggest supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG), producing almost 30 percent of the world total.<\/p>\n<p>According to Al Jazeera&#8217;s Bellis, Al-Kaabi said the declaration was purely a business decision.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Al-Kaabi said &#8216;we are a small player in OPEC, and I&#8217;m a businessman, it doesn&#8217;t make sense for me to focus on things that are not our strength, and gas is our strength so that is why we&#8217;ve made this decision&#8217;,&#8221; Bellis said.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Kaabi added the decision to increase the supply of natural gas is to &#8220;develop a future strategy based on growth and expansion, both in its activities at home and abroad.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Achieving our ambitious growth strategy will undoubtedly require focused efforts, commitment and dedication to maintain and strengthen Qatar&#8217;s position as the leading natural gas producer,&#8221;
