{"id":24045,"date":"2018-12-02T19:22:29","date_gmt":"2018-12-02T19:22:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=24045"},"modified":"2018-12-02T19:22:29","modified_gmt":"2018-12-02T19:22:29","slug":"record-number-of-bahraini-women-elected-to-parliament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=24045","title":{"rendered":"Record number of Bahraini women elected to parliament"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"132.163279366\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">A record number of women have been elected in Bahrain&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/12\/bahrain-votes-parliamentary-election-runoff-181201105722814.html\">elections<\/a> in what officials say is <span>an historic<\/span> achievement that has broken the glass ceiling of representation in the country&#8217;s parliament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">By the election&#8217;s second and final round of voting on Sunday, a total of six women were voted in, doubling the number of female legislators in the tiny Gulf kingdom.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;The 2018 elections are historic for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/bahrain.html\">Bahrain<\/a>,&#8221; Mohammed al-Sayed, spokesperson for Citizens for Bahrain organisation, told Al Arabiya English news channel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will certainly have more women in parliament, and this is a source of pride for all Bahrainis as we believe in equality and the important role played by Bahraini women in society and politics,&#8221; he continued.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/12\/2\/041e97fed03f4585bcd1893dd253525f_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/12\/2\/041e97fed03f4585bcd1893dd253525f_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"2\">\n<td class=\"caption\">Fawzia Zainal was elected in the first round on November 24 [Screengrab\/Instagram]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Sawsan Kamal, Zainab Abdul Amir, Massoma Abdul Raheem and Kaltham Al Hayki joined Fawzia Zainal and Fatima Al Qatari, who were elected in the first round on November 24.<\/p>\n<p>The total number of seats for Bahrain&#8217;s Council of Representatives is 40.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Breaking the glass ceiling&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Bahrain&#8217;s first elections in 2002 saw no women elected to parliament, despite 31 female candidates. The following election in 2006 saw only one woman elected, Lateefa al-Gaood, who retained her seat in 2010 and remained the sole woman legislator.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2014 election, three women were elected to parliament.<\/p>\n<p>Bahrain does not have a quota system for female representation in parliament, with many Bahrainis viewing such a scheme as running against the country&#8217;s constitution, which states <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/issues\/women-rights.html\">equal rights<\/a> for all of its citizens.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the state-owned Bahrain Television, Ahlam Janahi from Bahrain&#8217;s Businesswomen&#8217;s Society said the latest election will be remembered for breaking the glass ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Finally, the women of Bahrain have proven themselves that they are able to represent themselves in all facets of life and proved that as a country, we do not need a quota system in order guarantee female representation,&#8221; Janahi said.<\/p>\n<h2>Elections boycotted by opposition<\/h2>\n<p>The government said at 67 percent, the voter turnout for this year&#8217;s election was the largest in Bahrain&#8217;s history. The opposition, however, claimed the turnout did not exceed 30 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The last election in 2014 had a turnout of 53 percent after when opposition groups boycotted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/events\/election.html\">elections<\/a> in the Western-allied kingdom, home to the US Navy&#8217;s Fifth Fleet.<\/p>\n<p>Activists had called for a boycott of this vote, describing it as a &#8220;farce&#8221;, amid a crackdown on dissent by the ruling Al Khalifa family since it quashed a Shia-led uprising in 2011 with the help of neighbouring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/saudi-arabia.html\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the island state has kept a lid on dissent, closing opposition groups, barring their members from running in elections and prosecuting scores of people, many described by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/categories\/human_rights.html\">human rights<\/a> groups as activists, in mass trials.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A record number of women have been elected in Bahrain&#8217;s elections in what officials say is an historic achievement that has broken the glass ceiling of representation in the country&#8217;s parliament.
