Ipek faces charges in Turkey of funding \u201cterrorist\u201d enterprises linked to the US-based Turkish preacher Fethullah Gulen.<\/p>\n<p>\nGulen is accused of ordering the July 2016 attempted overthrow of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan but he strongly denies any involvement. Ankara calls Gulen\u2019s \u201cHizmet\u201d (Service) movement a terrorist group but followers insist they are part of a peaceful organization promoting moderate Islam and education.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"156\" src=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/sites\/default\/files\/userimages\/17\/untitled-3_copy_15.png\" width=\"200\">Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy said Turkey had \u201cstrongly emphasized to the British authorities\u201d that the ruling was \u201cunacceptable and deeply disappointing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cThe reasoning of the court to deny our extradition request is entirely unsubstantiated,\u201d Aksoy said in a statement, adding that Ankara expected the \u201cprompt return\u201d of suspects to then be tried before Turkish courts.<\/p>\n<p>\nJudge Zani was quoted as saying that Ipek would face \u201ca real risk of ill-treatment in the event of return,\u201d adding that recent events in the country \u201cgive this court little comfort that the rule of law has remained undisturbed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nHours after the ruling on Wednesday, Turkish Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul also hit out at the \u201cunacceptable\u201d ruling in a series of tweets.<\/p>\n<p>\nGul said Turkey expected the UK to extradite Ipek according to international laws and agreements, thereby showing \u201cfriendship\u201d to its NATO ally Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Turkish officials\u2019 criticism marks a rare moment of public discord between Ankara and London, whose relations have flourished in recent years even as Turkey\u2019s tensions with other EU countries strained further.<\/p>\n<p>\nTens of thousands of people have been arrested by Turkey in the crackdown that followed the attempted putsch and the Turkish authorities have also brought back suspects in secret operations from foreign countries including Ukraine and Kosovo.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\nOn May 15 this year, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had urged British Prime Minister Theresa May to extradite Turkish exiles from the Gulenist or Kurdish movements, saying that if she did not act act against terrorists, it would come back to bite her.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ANKARA: Turkey on Thursday lambasted an \u201cunacceptable\u201d decision by a British court to reject a request from Ankara to extradite a prominent businessman accused of providing financial support for the 2016 failed coup.
