{"id":23725,"date":"2018-11-29T21:22:45","date_gmt":"2018-11-29T21:22:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=23725"},"modified":"2018-11-29T21:22:45","modified_gmt":"2018-11-29T21:22:45","slug":"saudi-tv-report-houthi-chief-raise-hopes-for-yemen-peace-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=23725","title":{"rendered":"Saudi TV report, Houthi chief raise hopes for Yemen peace talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"132.37608486\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/yemen.html\">Yemen&#8217;s<\/a> warring parties have suggested they will attend the <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/un.html\">United Nations<\/a>-sponsored peace talks in Sweden next week as efforts aimed at ending a conflict that has pushed millions to the edge of <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/11\/yemen-85000-children-died-starvation-181121041742347.html\">starvation<\/a> gather pace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">A delegation of Yemen&#8217;s Saudi and UAE-backed government will arrive in\u00a0<span>the city of Stockholm<\/span> for the summit next week after Houthi counterparts show up first, the S<span>audi-owned\u00a0<\/span><span>Al-Arabiya television<\/span><span>\u00a0channel reported on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>The <span>Al-Arabiya report came hours after Britain&#8217;s ambassador to Yemen, Michael Aron, said the warring factions would attend the summit in Stockholm following discussions with their respective representatives.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Sweden consultations led by the UN envoy [<span>Martin Griffiths]<\/span>\u00a0will take place next week &#8230; the political solution is the way to move forward,&#8221; Aron said on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Hopes for the summit, which would be the first of its kind since 2016, appeared to be bolstered further by\u00a0<span>the head of the Houthi&#8217;s supreme revolutionary committee, who said on Thursday that the group&#8217;s delegation could attend the talks if their safe exit and return is guaranteed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think that the national [Houthi] delegation will be in Sweden God willing on December 3 if guarantees remain to ensure they can depart and return,&#8221; Mohammed Ali al-Huthi posted on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Huthi also called for &#8220;positive indications on the importance of peace from the other side&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2>Fragile peace efforts<\/h2>\n<p>Thursday&#8217;s developments came two months after previous efforts at securing peace talks broke down in September, w<span>hen\u00a0<\/span><span>Houthi representatives refused to attend a summit organised <span>in the Swiss city of Geneva,\u00a0<\/span>saying the UN had failed to meet the group&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/houthis-attend-geneva-talks-demands-met-180907093710133.html\">demands<\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Since then, the conflict in\u00a0<span>Yemen has continued unabated,\u00a0<span>with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/saudi-arabia.html\">Saudi Arabia<\/a><span>\u00a0and UAE-led forces launching an assault on the Red Sea coast city of\u00a0<span>Hodeidah, which is currently under Houthi control.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>Aid groups have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/11\/yemeni-forces-saudi-led-coalition-launch-vast-hodeidah-push-181109133507645.html\">warned<\/a>\u00a0that the city, which serves as the entry point for most of Yemen&#8217;s commercial imports and vital aid supplies, is at risk of &#8220;obliteration&#8221; amid the ongoing fighting.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The UN, meanwhile, has expressed concern that an all-out attack on <span>Hodeidah\u00a0<\/span>could lead to a famine in Yemen, where an estimated 8.4 million people are threatened with starvation.<\/p>\n<p>The Houthis have agreed to hand over the management of the port itself to the UN, but the warring sides are at odds over who should control the city.<\/p>\n<p><span>The ongoing\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/12\/yemen-civil-war-ali-abdullah-saleh-death-171204163618674.html\">conflict in Yemen<\/a><span>, the Arab world&#8217;s poorest country and home to an estimated 28 million people, began with the 2014 takeover of the capital, Sanaa, by Houthi rebels, who toppled the internationally recognised government of President\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/middleeast\/2012\/02\/2012219133034774204.html\">Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi<\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Concerned by the rise of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/houthis.html\">Houthis<\/a>, believed to be supported by Iran, a\u00a0US-backed Saudi-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-arab-emirates.html\">UAE<\/a>\u00a0military coalition\u00a0launched an intervention in 2015 through a massive air campaign aimed at reinstalling Hadi&#8217;s government.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the UN, at least 10,000 people have been killed since the coalition entered the conflict.
