{"id":23344,"date":"2018-11-26T21:23:13","date_gmt":"2018-11-26T21:23:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=23344"},"modified":"2018-11-26T21:23:13","modified_gmt":"2018-11-26T21:23:13","slug":"uk-parliament-to-vote-on-brexit-deal-on-december-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=23344","title":{"rendered":"UK parliament to vote on Brexit deal on December 11"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"139.90318737\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Members of the British parliament will vote on a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/events\/brexit.html\">Brexit<\/a> draft agreement with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/european-union.html\">European Union<\/a> on December 11, officials have announced, as Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/theresa.html\">Theresa May<\/a>\u00a0navigates the deal despite a slim working majority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The vote will take place after five days of parliamentary debate, a letter published by Chief Whip Julian Smith said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">It will decide the future of Britain&#8217;s departure from the EU, or Brexit, which it is officially set to take place on March 29, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>If British legislators back the plan devised by May&#8217;s government, then an EU Withdrawal Agreement bill will be introduced in parliament, which must be ratified by the members before it can proceed to a European Parliament vote before receiving EU Council approval.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"5.82879377432\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Here\u2019s the letter Chief Whip Julian Smith\u2019s has sent to MPs outlining the key dates over the next few weeks. Brexit meaningful vote and debate: Tuesday 4th-Tuesday 11th December. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/20Gm0hQxSj\">pic.twitter.com\/20Gm0hQxSj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Adam Payne (@adampayne26) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/adampayne26\/status\/1067101068759306243?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 26, 2018<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, if parliament rejects May&#8217;s plan, the government will have 21 days to decide its next move.<\/p>\n<p>In that case, a period of grave uncertainty would ensue, with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-kingdom.html\">UK<\/a>\u00a0leaving the EU without a deal; renegotiating the existing proposal; holding a general election; or even staging a second referendum on EU membership seen as possible scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>Both May and EU leaders have described the current agreement as the &#8220;best&#8221; and the &#8220;only possible&#8221; deal. On Sunday, EU leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/11\/eu-leaders-approve-brexit-deal-uk-181125094150637.html\">formally agreed to it <\/a>at a summit in Brussels.<\/p>\n<p>During the summit, EU leaders urged Britons to back May&#8217;s package.<\/p>\n<h2>Criticism from both sides<\/h2>\n<p>But in the UK, the agreement has received criticism from both supporters of Brexit as well as those who want the UK to remain part of the EU.<\/p>\n<p>For those in favour of a definitive Brexit, the deal fails to deliver on a clean break with the European project.<\/p>\n<p>For those in favour of Britain staying in the EU, the agreement is a watered down, inadequate version of the country&#8217;s existing membership arrangement with access to its customs union and single market.<\/p>\n<p>In parliament on Monday,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/jeremy-corbyn.html\">Jeremy Corbyn<\/a>, leader of Britain&#8217;s main opposition Labour Party, called the withdrawal deal and accompanying political declaration on future relations &#8220;an act of national self-harm&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For the good of the nation, the House has very little choice but to reject this deal,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>More disconcerting for May is a growing and vocal chorus of resentment from her own Conservative Party, with MP Mark Francois saying her deal was &#8220;as dead as a Dodo&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>May<span>\u00a0has\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/pms-eu-council-press-statement-25-november-2018\" target=\"_blank\">defended<\/a><span>\u00a0the terms of the agreement, saying the deal &#8220;unlocks a bright future for the UK&#8221; and claws back control of &#8220;borders &#8230; money &#8230; [and] laws&#8221; from Brussels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No one knows what would happen if this deal didn&#8217;t pass,&#8221; May told the House of Commons.<\/p>\n<p><span>One of the big issues is the future of the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The deal reached allows for a &#8220;backstop&#8221; to be set up in order to prevent a hard border being established if no trade deal is sorted out during the so-called &#8220;post-Brexit transitional period&#8221; between March 29, 2019 and December 31, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Under the terms of the agreement, the whole of the UK will remain in a customs union with the EU &#8220;unless and until&#8221; the bloc agrees there is no prospect of a return to a hard border.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE:<br \/>\n            <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the British parliament will vote on a\u00a0Brexit draft agreement with the European Union on December 11, officials have announced, as Prime Minister Theresa May\u00a0navigates the deal despite a slim working majority.
