{"id":23326,"date":"2018-11-26T18:22:58","date_gmt":"2018-11-26T18:22:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=23326"},"modified":"2018-11-26T18:22:58","modified_gmt":"2018-11-26T18:22:58","slug":"maldives-court-clears-jail-sentence-of-mohamed-nasheed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=23326","title":{"rendered":"Maldives court clears jail sentence of Mohamed Nasheed"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"123.315200497\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">The Maldives&#8217; top court has cancelled the 13-year prison sentence of former President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/2012\/02\/2012278561137271.html\">Mohamed Nasheed<\/a> following a\u00a0review of his controversial conviction on terrorism charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Nasheed, who recently returned home after years in self-exile, was elected president in 2008, becoming the island nation&#8217;s first democratically chosen leader.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">But he was toppled in what he called a coup in 2012, and found guilty of &#8220;terrorism&#8221; three years later over the arrest of a top judge during his tenure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court ruled on Monday that 51-year-old was wrongfully charged and the criminal court should not have proceeded to trial.<\/p>\n<p><span>Nasheed welcomed the news in a post on Twitter, expressing his &#8220;<\/span><span>deepest gratitude to the people of the Maldives&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The ruling came 10 days after the inauguration ceremony of recently elected President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who defeated former leader Abdulla Yameen in a September 23 vote.<\/p>\n<p>The presidency of Yameen, who assumed office in 2013 after winning a controversial runoff against Nasheed, was marked by political intrigue, turmoil and allegations of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/issues\/corruption.html\">corruption<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nasheed&#8217;s trial in 2015 was declared unfair by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/un.html\">United Nations<\/a>, prompted widespread protests and resulted in the arrest of hundreds of dissidents.<\/p>\n<p>In the years that followed and until the recent elections, almost all key opposition leaders were either jailed or gone into exile. In 2016, Nasheed also sought political asylum in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-kingdom.html\">UK<\/a> after travelling there on medical leave from prison.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after the court&#8217;s ruling, Hisaan Hussein, Nasheed&#8217;s lawyer, called the former president&#8217;s\u00a0&#8220;entire trial &#8230; a politically-motivated sham&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is appalling that an innocent man was unjustly forced to spend a year in jail, 35 months in exile, and was prevented from standing for political office.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span>Nasheed was expected to contest the September poll but was barred on account of his terrorism conviction.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"6.32732732733\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Pres. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MohamedNasheed?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@MohamedNasheed<\/a> was today finally cleared of terrorism charges.
