{"id":23282,"date":"2018-11-26T11:22:13","date_gmt":"2018-11-26T11:22:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=23282"},"modified":"2018-11-26T11:22:13","modified_gmt":"2018-11-26T11:22:13","slug":"uae-issues-pardon-for-british-scholar-matthew-hedges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=23282","title":{"rendered":"UAE issues pardon for British scholar Matthew Hedges"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"139.211480363\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">The United Arab Emirates (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-arab-emirates.html\">UAE<\/a>) has freed British scholar Matthew Hedges, who was sentenced to life in prison last week for spying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Hedges, 31, was released on Monday, after he received a presidential pardon, Emirati officials said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The scholar was among more than 700 people pardoned by the UAE President\u00a0<span>Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Monday, the country&#8217;s national day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The scholar will be permitted to leave the UAE &#8220;once formalities are completed&#8221;, an official statement said, ahead of his release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Daniela Tejada, Hedges&#8217; wife, said on Twitter that the pardon was the &#8220;best news we could&#8217;ve received&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"9.29856115108\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The presidential pardon for Matt is the best news we could\u2019ve received. Thank you friends, family, media, academics, and the wider public for your undivided support &#8211; I\u2019ve been brought back to life. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vruok0ST6O\">pic.twitter.com\/vruok0ST6O<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Daniela Tejada (@dtejadav) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dtejadav\/status\/1066978742248095744?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 26, 2018<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She also told the BBC that she does not believe her husband is a spy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can&#8217;t wait to have him back&#8221; and added: &#8220;In my heart, I know that he isn&#8217;t a spy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>International pressure<\/h2>\n<p>The UAE had come under increasing international pressure since Hedges,\u00a0a doctoral student in Middle Eastern studies at Durham University\u00a0in northern England,\u00a0was handed a life sentence.<\/p>\n<p>He was arrested at Dubai International Airport on May 5 after a two-week research visit.<\/p>\n<p>The UAE signalled on Friday that it was working on an &#8220;amicable solution&#8221; to the issue, after London described Hedges&#8217; sentence as deeply disappointing.<\/p>\n<p>Emirati officials made a point on Monday to insist that the arrest came on solid ground, showing journalists in Abu Dhabi short video clips of Hedges purportedly acknowledging his intelligence work.<\/p>\n<p>In one video clip, Hedges, is seen describing himself as a captain in MI-6, during what appears to be a court hearing in the Gulf Arab country.<\/p>\n<p>Another clip appears to show Hedges speaking to someone in an office and saying: &#8220;It helps the research to go in an easy way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then, Hedges is seen snapping his fingers and adds: &#8220;Then it becomes MI-6.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Emirati officials did not allow journalists to record the video.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He was a part-time PhD researcher, a part-time businessman, but he was a 100-percent full-time secret service operative,&#8221; said Jaber al-Lamki, an official with the UAE&#8217;s National Media Council.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mr. Hedges has been found guilty of espionage. He sought out sensitive information he knew had access to it.
