protesters in the capital, Paris, as demonstrations against\u00a0rising fuel taxes and President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/04\/profile-emmanuel-macron-170403132712654.html\">Emmanuel Macron<\/a>&#8216;s economic policies spread throughout the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>Thousands of police\u00a0were deployed nationwide to contain Saturday&#8217;s rallies, which saw\u00a0<span>5,000 protesters descending in central Paris and 23,000 others in cities across France, according to officials.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span><span>The protesters are upset about new taxes on diesel and petrol<span>, justified as an anti-<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/issues\/pollution.html\"><strong>pollution<\/strong><\/a><span>\u00a0levy by Macron&#8217;s centrist government. <\/span> <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>A<\/span> <\/span> <\/span> week ago, more than 250,000 people wearing\u00a0<span>fluorescent yellow vests joined the nationwide protests &#8211;\u00a0<\/span>from southerly Provence to northerly Normandy and in between &#8211; that have laid bare growing\u00a0<span>anger over stagnant spending power and the rollback in public services in some parts of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Two people have died and more than 750 others, including 136 police officers, have been injured during the week of demonstrations, which\u00a0have also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/11\/frances-fuel-protests-stretched-islands-reunion-181122110413086.html\">spread to French territories abroad<\/a>, including the Indian Ocean island of Reunion.<\/p>\n<p>Since assuming office in May 2017, Macron has also seen off trade union and street demonstrations against his changes to labour rules.<\/p>\n<p>Political foes meanwhile have dismissed him as the &#8220;president of the rich&#8221; for ending a wealth tax, while his popularity has slumped at barely 20 percent.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span>Demonstrators demand Macron resignation<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>In Paris, demonstrators at\u00a0<span>Champs-Elysees <\/span>sang the national anthem and waved French flags while others carried signs with slogans saying &#8220;Macron, resignation&#8221; we see how we are welcomed in Paris,&#8221; Christophe, a 49-year-old who had travelled to Paris from the Isere region in eastern France with his wife,\u00a0told the AFP news agency.<\/p>\n<h2>Alleged far-right involvement<\/h2>\n<p><span>Authorities, meanwhile, claimed the unrest was linked to the &#8220;presence of members of the far right who harassed the security forces&#8221;. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Interior Minister Christophe Castaner<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span> accused\u00a0 <span>Marine Le Pen,\u00a0<\/span>leader of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/spotlight\/politics.html\">far-right<\/a> National Front party, of fanning the protests.<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;The ultra-right is mobilised and is building barricades on the Champs Elysees.
