{"id":22952,"date":"2018-11-23T12:25:39","date_gmt":"2018-11-23T12:25:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=22952"},"modified":"2018-11-23T12:25:39","modified_gmt":"2018-11-23T12:25:39","slug":"sri-lanka-rajapaksa-opponents-win-control-of-parliament-panel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=22952","title":{"rendered":"Sri Lanka: Rajapaksa opponents win control of parliament panel"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"107.561471442\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Opponents of the disputed Sri Lankan Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/mahinda-rajapaksa.html\">Mahinda Rajapaksa<\/a> have won control of a crucial committee in parliament, in a serious setback to his government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Legislators on Friday voted to hand control of the committee that sets the parliamentary agenda to the country&#8217;s deposed prime minister, <span>Ranil Wickremesinghe,<\/span>\u00a0as Rajapaksa&#8217;s supporters staged a walkout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Sri Lanka has been in political crisis since October 26, when President Maithripala Sirisena abruptly fired Wickremesinghe as prime minister and appointed Rajapaksa, a controversial former president.<\/p>\n<p>The move was widely denounced as unconstitutional and both men have claimed to be the legitimate officeholder.<\/p>\n<p>Wickremesinghe argues that he still commands majority support within parliament and, despite being fired, he continues to occupy his official residence.<\/p>\n<p><span>Rajapaksa has lost two no-confidence votes in the assembly but has refused to stand down.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>Pandemonium in parliament<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/11\/pandemonium-sri-lanka-parliament-mps-hurl-books-speaker-181116121100915.html\">pandemonium broke out<\/a> in the assembly when Rajapaksa&#8217;s supporters threw books, chairs and chilli paste at rivals in an attempt to disrupt the second no-confidence motion.<\/p>\n<p><span>Two weeks after sacking Wickremesinghe, Sirisena initially suspended and then dissolved parliament, calling snap elections for January.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>These moves were suspended by Sri Lanka&#8217;s supreme court, pending an investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The parliament reconvened last week but degenerated into a brawl.<\/p>\n<p>The parliament speaker Karu Jayasuriya said on November 15 that he would recognise neither Rajapaksa nor\u00a0<span>Wickremesinghe as prime minister.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The two rivals later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/11\/sirisena-rajapaksa-wickremesinghe-fail-power-struggle-181118210835557.html\">met the president<\/a> for talks on ending the weeks-long crisis but failed to reach a breakthrough.<\/p>\n<p>The ongoing power struggle has led to a downgrade of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/sri-lanka.html\">Sri Lanka<\/a>&#8216;s credit rating.<\/p>\n<p><span>The authorities announced on Thursday that they will halt any sovereign bond issues as international borrowing costs had shot up, following the credit downgrade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Legislators on both sides say that with the administration at a standstill, key sectors such as tourism in the Indian Ocean island are suffering badly.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE:<br \/>\n            <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Opponents of the disputed Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa have won control of a crucial committee in parliament, in a serious setback to his government.
