{"id":22370,"date":"2018-11-19T09:22:12","date_gmt":"2018-11-19T09:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=22370"},"modified":"2018-11-19T09:22:12","modified_gmt":"2018-11-19T09:22:12","slug":"missing-1600-year-old-mosaic-returned-after-four-decades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=22370","title":{"rendered":"Missing 1,600-year-old mosaic returned after four decades"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"82.0277865488\">\n<p>A 1,600-year-old missing mosaic has finally returned to its home in Cyprus, more than four decades after it was looted from a church.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component BasicArticle__paragraph BasicArticle__pad\" readability=\"33.8677248677\">\nDutch art historian and art crime investigator<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/style\/article\/stolen-dutch-artworks-westfries-museum\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Arthur Brand<\/a> spent the past three years tracking down the stolen artifact, a Byzantine-era depiction of Saint Mark, Brand<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthurbrand.com\/track-record\/cyprys-mosaic-st-mark\/\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> on his website.\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component BasicArticle__paragraph BasicArticle__pad\" readability=\"32.3186813187\">\nThe relic was handed over to the Cypriot Antiquities Department and the Church of Cyprus during a ceremony at the Hague in the Netherlands on Sunday,<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cna.org.cy\/webnews-en.aspx?a=825466ed0fb04e37a848a8225d8960a1\" target=\"_blank\">according<\/a> to Cyprus News Agency.\n<\/div>\n<p>The sixth-century mosaic was stolen from the church of Panaya Kanakaria<strong> <\/strong>in northern Cyprus following the Turkish invasion in 1974. It&#8217;s one of the last and most beautiful examples of art from the early Byzantine era,&#8221; Brand<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/20181118-missing-st-mark-mosaic-finally-returns-cyprus\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> Agence France-Presse.\n<\/div>\n<p>It was the hunt of a lifetime for Brand and one that took him across Europe, where &#8220;informants were arrested in unrelated cases&#8221; and &#8220;people got scared and disappeared,&#8221; he claimed in a post on his website. <\/p>\n<p>Brand managed to trace the mosaic to an apartment of a British family in Monaco who were &#8220;horrified&#8221; to find out the piece was looted treasure. <\/p>\n<div class=\"BasicArticle__video BasicArticle__padLarge\" readability=\"32\">\n<p>How do art auctions really work?<!-- --> <span class=\"BasicArticle__credit\"><\/span><span class=\"BasicArticle__credit\"><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;It was in the possession of a British family, who bought the mosaic in good faith more than four decades ago,&#8221; he told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>The owner, according to Brand, agreed to return the artwork to Cyprus and was offered a symbolic compensation for taking care of it over the years.<\/p>\n<p>Brand is a well known figure in the art crime world.
