{"id":21970,"date":"2018-11-15T17:23:51","date_gmt":"2018-11-15T17:23:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=21970"},"modified":"2018-11-15T17:23:51","modified_gmt":"2018-11-15T17:23:51","slug":"my-deal-no-deal-or-no-brexit-uks-may-fights-for-survival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=21970","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;My deal, no deal or no Brexit&#8217;: UK&#8217;s May fights for survival"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"192.557072638\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/theresa.html\">Theresa May<\/a> has said her draft agreement on Britain&#8217;s departure from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/european-union.html\">European Union<\/a> is the only way to avoid a no-deal Brexit as she faced political attacks from all sides, including the threat of a no-confidence vote from within her own party.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Speaking before a hostile parliament\u00a0after several ministers quit on Thursday, the leader of Britain&#8217;s Conservative party told legislators &#8220;the choice is clear&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;We can choose to leave with no deal, we can risk no Brexit at all, or we can choose to unite and support the best deal that can be negotiated,&#8221; May told the House of Commons.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her comments came after two cabinet\u00a0<span>ministers, including the head of Brexit negotiations and two junior ministers,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/11\/britain-brexit-secretary-dominic-raab-resigns-181115072942347.html\">quit\u00a0the government<span>\u00a0<\/span>in protest<\/a><span>\u00a0against the agreement over Britain&#8217;s departure from the bloc on March 29, 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In his resignation letter, Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab, who oversaw Brexit negotiations under May, said May&#8217;s plan threatened the integrity of the UK.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I regret to say that, following the cabinet meeting yesterday on the Brexit deal, I must resign,&#8221; he said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I cannot reconcile the terms of the proposed deal with the promises we made to the country in our manifesto at the last election. This is, at its heart, a matter of public trust.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Esther McVey, the secretary for work and pensions, said the draft deal &#8220;does not honour the result of the referendum&#8221; in her own resignation letter.<\/p>\n<p>The 585-page draft aims to ensure a smooth divorce from the EU after more than four decades of membership and outlines a transition period for both sides to adjust to the break.<\/p>\n<p>Key provisions seek to avoid a hard border between EU member Ireland and the British province of Northern Ireland, protect citizens&#8217; rights and settle Britain&#8217;s last bill.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"2.93269230769\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Is it time to write? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/K2S9ZSwPKU\">pic.twitter.com\/K2S9ZSwPKU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jacob Rees-Mogg (@Jacob_Rees_Mogg) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Jacob_Rees_Mogg\/status\/1063048829036052480?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 15, 2018<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Meanwhile, Jacob Rees-Mogg, who leads a group of anti-EU Conservatives,\u00a0submitted on a letter of no-confidence in the prime minister saying that &#8220;it would be in the interest of the party and the country if she were to stand aside&#8221;.<\/span>At least 48 such letters from Conservative MPs are required to trigger a vote of no-confidence in the party leader, but a majority of the party&#8217;s 315 legislators would have to vote against May in order for her to be removed.<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera&#8217;s Paul Brennan, reporting from London, said it was a &#8220;bruising session of parliament&#8221; for May, adding that there was little hope for her proposed Brexit deal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is a sizeable contingent within parliament now that thinks reversing the whole process might be the only way out of this crisis,&#8221; Brennan said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Al Jazeera, Jonathan Lis, deputy director of British Influence, a pro-EU group, was similarly skeptical, saying &#8220;Brexit&#8217;s car has met reality&#8217;s wall today&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Amid the political turmoil, the pound plunged on currency markets, falling 1.7 percent to $1.27, its second-biggest drop after it fell 1.73 percent against the US dollar in September.<\/p>\n<h2>Preparing for no-deal<\/h2>\n<p>May told legislators that they will have to consider the British people&#8217;s <span>June 2016\u00a0<\/span>vote to leave the EU when parliament is asked to vote on a final Brexit agreement, which could potentially happen in December.<\/p>\n<p>The referendum saw 52 percent of voters choosing to leave the EU, while 48 percent voted to remain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The results triggered international shock and questions as to how Brexit could be implemented &#8211; the economies of the UK and EU are intertwined, as is their territory.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most complicated issues is the prospect of a &#8220;hard border&#8221; in Ireland.
