{"id":21814,"date":"2018-11-09T20:23:06","date_gmt":"2018-11-09T20:23:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=21814"},"modified":"2018-11-09T20:23:06","modified_gmt":"2018-11-09T20:23:06","slug":"austrian-ex-officer-suspected-of-spying-for-russia-for-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=21814","title":{"rendered":"Austrian ex-officer suspected of spying for Russia for years"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"133.495692131\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/austria.html\">Austria<\/a> has launched a probe into an army colonel suspected of spying for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/russia.html\">Russia<\/a> for decades, Chancellor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/10\/sebastian-kurz-europe-youngest-leader-171016124645623.html\">Sebastian Kurz<\/a>\u00a0has said, the latest in a string of cases where Moscow has been accused of espionage in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/european-union.html\">European Union<\/a> states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The comments by the Austrian leader on Friday were quickly dismissed by Moscow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Kurz told a press conference on Friday that the colonel, now retired, is suspected to have worked with the Russian intelligence since the 1990s and until this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Of course, if such cases are confirmed, whether it be in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/netherlands.html\">the Netherlands<\/a> or in Austria, it can&#8217;t improve the relationship between EU and Russia,&#8221; Kurz told reporters in Vienna.<\/p>\n<p><!-- PAGELOADEDSUCCESSFULLY-->He was referring to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/netherlands-disrupted-russian-hacking-attack-dutch-minister-181004103110889.html\">expulsion of four Russian agents<\/a> by the Netherlands in April for allegedly planning a cyber attack on the global chemical weapons watchdog at The Hague.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Russian spying in Europe is unacceptable and to be condemned,&#8221; the chancellor said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that Austria was &#8220;demanding transparent information from the Russian side&#8221; and that it would consult its European partners on further steps.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl summoned Russian authorities over the matter and cancelled an upcoming trip to Russia.<\/p>\n<p>In response, Russian Foreign Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/sergey-lavrov.html\">Sergey Lavrov<\/a> said he was &#8220;unpleasantly surprised&#8221; by the revelation and accused Austria of &#8220;making an accusation [Russia knows] nothing about.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If a country has concerns or suspicions about another country&#8217;s actions and its alleged involvement [is] seen as a threat, it should directly ask for an explanation in line with the international law,&#8221; Lavrov said.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s foreign ministry summoned the Austrian ambassador to Moscow to discuss the issue, saying the suspicions had &#8220;exacerbated&#8221; the two country&#8217;s &#8220;previously positive ties&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2>Equipment handed over<\/h2>\n<p>Austrian Defence Minister Mario Kunasek said the case came to light &#8220;a few weeks ago&#8221; as a result of information from another European intelligence agency.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can&#8217;t say for the moment whether this is an isolated incident or not,&#8221; Kunasek said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- PAGELOADEDSUCCESSFULLY-->He said that the colonel had handed over &#8220;technical equipment&#8221;, including his laptop which is being examined.<\/p>\n<p>Kunasek said that during questioning, the colonel said the Russians were interested &#8220;in weapons systems, in the migration situation here in Austria in recent years&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Profiles of certain people were also created and passed on,&#8221; Kunasek said.<\/p>\n<p>The case indicated that &#8220;even after the end of the Cold War, spying has continued and shows the need to tighten our security network, within Austria and within the defence ministry,&#8221; Kunasek said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Austrian media reports, the colonel was paid an equivalent of $340,000 for his services.<\/p>\n<p>Austria is not a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/nato.html\">NATO<\/a> and asserts its status as a neutral country.<\/p>\n<p>It was one of the few European countries not to expel Russian diplomats following the poisoning of ex-spy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/spotlight\/180317084652484.html\">Sergei Skripal<\/a> and his daughter Yulia in Britain in March.<\/p>\n<p>Austria&#8217;s relationship with Russia has come under particular scrutiny since the far-right Freedom Party (FPOe) joined the coalition government last December.<\/p>\n<p>The FPOe &#8211;
