{"id":21748,"date":"2018-11-09T09:23:00","date_gmt":"2018-11-09T09:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=21748"},"modified":"2018-11-09T09:23:00","modified_gmt":"2018-11-09T09:23:00","slug":"us-court-halts-construction-of-keystone-xl-oil-pipeline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=21748","title":{"rendered":"US court halts construction of Keystone XL oil pipeline"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"94.4897240164\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">A federal judge has blocked construction of the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline, arguing that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-states.html\">United States&#8217;<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/donald-trump.html\">President Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s administration had failed to adequately explain why it had lifted a ban on the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The ruling on Thursday by Judge Brian Morris of the US District Court for the District of Montana dealt a stinging setback to Trump and the oil industry and served up a big win for conservationists and indigenous groups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Trump granted a permit that allowed energy firm TransCanada to build the controversial Keystone XL pipeline shortly after taking office.\u00a0<span>He said it would create jobs and spur development of infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The administration overturned a ruling by the previous Barack Obama administration in 2015 that denied a permit for the pipeline, largely on environmental grounds.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling is temporary and requires the government to do a more thorough review of how the project might affect the climate, cultural resources and wildlife.<\/p>\n<p><span>The project will duplicate an existing 1,150km pipeline, allowing it to ship up to 890,000 barrels of oil a day\u00a0from landlocked Alberta to the Pacific coast of neighbouring British Columbia, in western\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/canada.html\">Canada<\/a><span>, for export overseas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>TransCanada had tried for more than five years to build the 1,897km pipeline until Obama rejected it in November 2015 amid pressure from environmentalists.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Indigenous leaders, who have been at the forefront of a grassroots campaign against the Trans Mountain project, have vowed that the pipeline &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/04\/trudeau-fire-trans-mountain-pipeline-opposition-grows-180418072220251.html\">will never be built<\/a><span>&#8220;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Many indigenous people see the new pipeline as a threat to their lands, echoing concerns raised by Native Americans about the Keystone XL project in the US.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A federal judge has blocked construction of the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline, arguing that United States&#8217; President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration had failed to adequately explain why it had lifted a ban on the project.
