{"id":21662,"date":"2018-11-08T18:22:57","date_gmt":"2018-11-08T18:22:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=21662"},"modified":"2018-11-08T18:22:57","modified_gmt":"2018-11-08T18:22:57","slug":"bangladesh-general-election-on-december-23-despite-zias-arrest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=21662","title":{"rendered":"Bangladesh general election on December 23 despite Zia&#8217;s arrest"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"113.428790787\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Authorities in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/bangladesh.html\">Bangladesh<\/a>\u00a0have said they will hold a &#8220;free and fair&#8221; national election on December 23\u00a0despite bitter wrangling between the government and the opposition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Bangladesh&#8217;s Election Commission announced on Thursday that the election will take place despite the imprisonment of the leader of the main opposition party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;A favourable situation prevails in the country to hold a free and fair election,&#8221; Chief Election Commissioner Nurul Huda\u00a0said in an address aired by state-run television and radio stations.<\/p>\n<p>Huda said he hoped all parties will participate in the election, in which Prime Minister <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/sheikh-hasina-141021135754822.html\">Sheikh Hasina<\/a> is seeking re-election.<\/p>\n<p>The opposition has expressed fears that the election will not be democratic and has threatened protests.<\/p>\n<p>Hasina&#8217;s archrival and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/ill-khaleda-zia-admitted-dhaka-hospital-181006114052387.html\">opposition leader Khaleda Zia<\/a>, who\u00a0is in jail on corruption charges, is likely to be banned from contesting.<\/p>\n<p>The Election Commission announced that the candidates must file nominations by November 19, leaving Zia virtually no time to appeal.<\/p>\n<h2>Opposition in disarray<\/h2>\n<p>On Wednesday, the ruling Awami League party rejected an opposition demand for a caretaker government ahead of the election, saying it was &#8220;unconstitutional&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) says a caretaker government is essential for free and fair polls.<\/p>\n<p>It is still not clear whether the BNP would contest the election. The party boycotted the 2014 polls, which were marred by deadly violence and labelled\u00a0<span>by international observers as &#8220;flawed&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The BNP alleges over 500 of its supporters have been killed and nearly 750 abducted by the police and thrown in jails since 2014.<\/p>\n<p>In recent months, the BNP&#8217;s strength was further weakened after Zia was\u00a0<a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/bangladesh-court-doubles-jail-term-opposition-leader-zia-181030061806138.html\">convicted and sentenced<\/a>\u00a0to seven and 10 years in jail in two separate cases of corruption.<\/p>\n<p>Her eldest son and heir apparent, Tarique Rahman, who lives in exile in London, was also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/bangladesh-court-sentences-19-death-2004-attack-case-181009111251124.html\">sentenced to life in prison<\/a> over a 2004 grenade attack targeting Hasina.<\/p>\n<p>It will be Bangladesh&#8217;s 11th general election since it gained independence from Pakistan through a bloody war in 1971.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Authoritarian rule&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Hasina&#8217;s government has earned global plaudits for letting in hundreds of thousands of <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/rohingya.html\">Rohingya<\/a> refugees who fled persecution in Myanmar.<\/p>\n<p>However, critics have decried her <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/sheikh-hasina-turning-bangladesh-party-state-180404082024893.html\">increasingly &#8220;authoritarian rule&#8221;<\/a>, the government&#8217;s handling of student protests this year and its crackdown on free speech.<\/p>\n<p>Civil society groups and activists have criticised the country&#8217;s new <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/bangladesh-editors-protest-chilling-digital-security-law-181015122440417.html\">Digital Security Act<\/a> and a new broadcast law that is under consideration, warning such regulations may affect a fair election.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE:<br \/>\n            <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Authorities in\u00a0Bangladesh\u00a0have said they will hold a &#8220;free and fair&#8221; national election on December 23\u00a0despite bitter wrangling between the government and the opposition.
