{"id":21593,"date":"2018-11-08T04:23:40","date_gmt":"2018-11-08T04:23:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=21593"},"modified":"2018-11-08T04:23:40","modified_gmt":"2018-11-08T04:23:40","slug":"tough-line-on-iran-to-continue-as-trump-hails-great-win-in-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=21593","title":{"rendered":"Tough line on Iran to continue as Trump hails \u2018great win\u2019 in election"},"content":{"rendered":"<div itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-io-article-url=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1401106\/middle-east\" readability=\"113\">\n<p>\nWASHINGTON, AMMAN: President Donald Trump on Wednesday hailed \u201ca great win\u201d in midterm elections after his Republican party increased its majority in the US Senate, although it lost control of the lower House of Representatives.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Republicans \u201cdefied history\u201d by retaining control of the upper house and \u201cdramatically outperformed historical precedents,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>\nAnalysts said the loss of the House of Representatives was unlikely to affect President Trump\u2019s regional policies, particularly in relation to Iran.<\/p>\n<p>\nEliot Engel, the congressman expected to head the House Foreign Affairs Committee, was one of the Democrats who opposed the 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\nOn Trump\u2019s foreign policies, he said: \u201cI don\u2019t think we should challenge something just because it\u2019s put forth by the administration, but I do think we have an obligation to review policies and do oversight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nThe election brought wins for Arab-American candidates on both sides of the political divide, and two Democrats made history by becoming the first Muslim women elected to Congress.<\/p>\n<p>\nRashida Tlaib, 42, the daughter of Palestinian immigrants, ran virtually unopposed in Michigan. Ilhan Omar, 37, a former refugee from Somalia, won in Minneapolis, Minnesota, succeeding Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress.<\/p>\n<p>\nTlaib has become \u201ca source of pride for Palestine and the entire Arab and Muslim world,\u201d her uncle, Bassam Tlaib, said in the Palestinian village of Beit Ur Al-Fauqa.<\/p>\n<p>\nSam Bahour, a Palestinian-American business consultant in Ramallah, told Arab News Tlaib\u2019s victory spoke volumes about the accumulation of political expertise and the political assimilation of Palestinian-Americans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cWe are proud that this trailblazer American politician is female, a professional, and ready and able to speak truth to power,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\nPalestinian diplomat Husam Zomlot said: \u201cHer victory is historic and indicative of the role the Palestinian-American community will play in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nOmar fled Somalia\u2019s civil war with her parents when she was 8, and spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya. In 1997, the family settled in Minnesota, where there is a large Somali population. She won a seat in the state\u2019s legislature in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\nElsewhere, Republican Justin Amash, the first Palestinian elected to Congress, in 2010 in Michigan, was comfortably re-elected.<\/p>\n<p>\nIn Florida, Lebanese-American Democrat Donna Shalala defeated Republican Maria Elvira Salazar.
