{"id":21379,"date":"2018-11-06T20:23:08","date_gmt":"2018-11-06T20:23:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=21379"},"modified":"2018-11-06T20:23:08","modified_gmt":"2018-11-06T20:23:08","slug":"un-bangladesh-must-not-send-rohingya-back-to-myanmar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=21379","title":{"rendered":"UN: Bangladesh must not send Rohingya back to Myanmar"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"123.458795563\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Bangladesh should drop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/bangladesh-myanmar-start-returning-rohingya-november-181030111704845.html\">plans to start repatriating<\/a> hundreds of thousands of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/2017\/08\/rohingya-muslims-170831065142812.html\">Rohingya<\/a> refugees to Rakhine State as they face a &#8220;high risk of persecution&#8221;, the United Nations&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/categories\/human_rights.html\">human rights<\/a> investigator on Myanmar has warned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">More than 700,000 Rohingya refugees crossed into Bangladesh from western <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/myanmar.html\">Myanmar<\/a> after a sweeping military crackdown in August 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">On October 30, Bangladesh and Myanmar agreed to begin the return of the refugees in mid-November but the UN refugee agency, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/unhcr.html\">UNHCR<\/a>, said conditions in Rakhine State were &#8220;not yet conducive for returns&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I urge the governments of Bangladesh and Myanmar to halt these rushed plans for repatriation,&#8221;\u00a0<span>Yanghee Lee, UN special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar, said on Tuesday,\u00a0<\/span>calling on the country to grant the Rohingya their long-sought right to citizenship, freedom of movement and access to public services.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Myanmar does not consider the Rohingya a native ethnic group. Many in the Buddhist-majority country call the Rohingya &#8220;Bengalis&#8221;, suggesting they belong in Bangladesh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lee said Myanmar &#8220;failed to provide guarantees they [the Rohingya] would not suffer the same persecution and horrific violence all over again&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The investigator said she had received credible information from the refugees in Cox&#8217;s Bazar, Bangladesh, that &#8220;they are in deep fear of their names being on the list to be repatriated, causing distress and anguish&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><span>Last month, Myanmar officials said they verified 5,000 Rohingya refugees so far, with the &#8220;first batch&#8221; of 2,000 to be repatriated in November.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The UN condemned the repatriation deal, confirming it had not been consulted on the plan.<\/p>\n<p>Stephane Dujarric, a spokesman for the UN Secretary-General <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/antonio-guterres.html\">Antonio Guterres<\/a>, said the deal had taken the UN&#8217;s refugee agency (UNHCR) by surprise.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To be clear \u2026 UNHCR, which is in lead on the issues of refugees, was not consulted on this matter,&#8221; said Dujarric.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Melzer, UNHCR&#8217;s senior external officer based in Cox&#8217;s Bazar, reiterated this, saying: &#8220;UNHCR was not a party to that agreement&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We would advise against imposing any timetable or target figures for repatriation in respect of the voluntary nature and sustainability of return,&#8221; added Melzer. &#8220;It is unclear if refugees know their names are on this list that has been cleared by Myanmar.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They need to be informed.
