{"id":21051,"date":"2018-11-04T13:22:44","date_gmt":"2018-11-04T13:22:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=21051"},"modified":"2018-11-04T13:22:44","modified_gmt":"2018-11-04T13:22:44","slug":"bahrain-opposition-leaders-get-life-term-over-qatar-spying-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=21051","title":{"rendered":"Bahrain opposition leaders get life term over Qatar spying case"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"135.713020372\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Bahrain&#8217;s appeals court has sentenced three senior members of the country&#8217;s opposition movement to life in prison over charges of spying for neighbouring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/qatar.html\">Qatar<\/a>, according to a statement from the public prosecutor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The verdict against Sheikh Ali Salman, who headed the now-outlawed al-Wefaq movement, as well as Sheikh Hassan Sultan and Ali al-Aswad came on Sunday, months after their acquittal by the high criminal court in June.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Sultan and al-Aswad were tried in absentia.<\/p>\n<p>The trio was sentenced for &#8220;acts of hostility&#8221; against Bahrain and &#8220;communicating with Qatari officials&#8230; to overthrow constitutional order&#8221;, the public prosecutor&#8217;s statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The latest ruling can be appealed.<\/p>\n<p>Salman is currently serving a four-year sentence in a separate case &#8211; &#8220;inciting hatred&#8221; in the kingdom, which has seen mainly Shia protests against the Sunni monarchy since 2011.<\/p>\n<p>In November, Salman and two other members of al-Wefaq were charged with working for Qatari intelligence with the aim of overthrowing the Bahraini government.<\/p>\n<p>Rights groups, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/amnesty-international.html\">Amnesty International<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/human-rights-watch.html\">Human Rights Watch<\/a>, have declared Salman and other jailed opposition leaders prisoners of conscience.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/11\/4\/4dc4bc3b467a4dbf8ae05eb80c65dd94_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"2.5\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/11\/4\/4dc4bc3b467a4dbf8ae05eb80c65dd94_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"5\">\n<td class=\"caption\">Tried in absentia, Ali al-Aswad was elected to Bahrain&#8217;s parliament in 2010, but resigned in 2011 in response to the government&#8217;s crackdown\u00a0[Al Jazeera]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Sima Watling, Amnesty International&#8217;s campaigner on Bahrain, told Al Jazeera from Beirut that the verdict was &#8220;absurd&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>She said that Salman had phone conversations with the foreign minister of Qatar in 2011, urging Doha to mediate in Bahrain&#8217;s political crisis, and the interaction was used six years later as a proof for spying charges.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The new charges are absurd,&#8221; Watling said.\u00a0&#8220;It appears to be linked to the Qatar crisis and the Bahraini authorities are going forward with their crush on dissent. Any opposition or opposing voice is being crushed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bahrain, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/saudi-arabia.html\">Saudi Arabia<\/a> and the United Arab Emirates, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/06\/qatar-diplomatic-crisis-latest-updates-170605105550769.html\">severed all ties <\/a>with Qatar in 2017, banning their citizens from travel to or communication with the fellow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/gcc.html\">Gulf Cooperation Council<\/a> member.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Parliamentary elections<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Sunday&#8217;s verdict comes days ahead of Bahrain&#8217;s November 24 parliamentary elections.\u00a0Members of dissolved opposition parties, including al-Wefaq and the secular al-Waad group, are banned from running.<\/p>\n<p>The Sunni-ruled Gulf state has been hit by waves of unrest since 2011 when security forces crushed Shia-led protests demanding a constitutional monarchy and an elected prime minister.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition movements have been outlawed and hundreds of dissidents have been imprisoned &#8211; with many stripped of their nationality.<\/p>\n<p>Bahrain last year ratified a constitutional amendment granting military courts the authority to try civilians charged with &#8220;terrorism&#8221;, a term that is loosely defined by the Bahraini penal code.<\/p>\n<p>In June, the kingdom amended its law on political rights, prohibiting &#8220;leaders and members of political associations dissolved for violating the kingdom&#8217;s constitution or its laws&#8221; from running in legislative elections.<\/p>\n<p>Bahrain, a key ally of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-states.html\">United States<\/a> and home to the US Fifth Fleet, accuses Shia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/iran.html\">Iran<\/a> of provoking unrest in the kingdom.
