{"id":20781,"date":"2018-11-02T06:23:47","date_gmt":"2018-11-02T06:23:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=20781"},"modified":"2018-11-02T06:23:47","modified_gmt":"2018-11-02T06:23:47","slug":"chemical-terrorism-lone-wolf-attacks-highlighted-at-arab-conference-in-tunis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=20781","title":{"rendered":"Chemical terrorism, \u2018lone wolf\u2019 attacks highlighted at Arab conference in Tunis"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-io-article-url=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1397846\/middle-east\" readability=\"93\">\n<p>\nWASHINGTON: US National Security Adviser John Bolton said the administration of President Donald Trump wants sanctions on Iran\u2019s crude exports to strain Tehran, but does not want to harm countries that depend on the oil.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe US is preparing to impose the new sanctions on Iran\u2019s oil industry after Washington withdrew from a nuclear deal between Tehran and other global powers earlier this year, but is also considering offering waivers to some allies that rely on Iranian supplies.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cWe want to achieve maximum pressure but we don\u2019t want to harm friends and allies either,\u201d Bolton said in a talk at the Hamilton Society.<\/p>\n<p>\nBolton said the administration understands that a number of countries, some close geographically to Iran which he visited last week, and others \u201cmay not be able to go all the way, all the way to zero immediately.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"219\" src=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/sites\/default\/files\/userimages\/17\/untitled-1_copy_42.png\" width=\"289\">It was a more conciliatory tone about the sanctions from Bolton, a proponent of being tough on Iran and winding down its crude exports to zero.<\/p>\n<p>\nStill, Bolton said that consequences can already be seen in Iran including the collapse of the rial, its currency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cI think it\u2019s important that we not relax in the effort,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\nIn a presidential memorandum addressed to secretaries of State, Treasury and Energy, Trump said he determined there was sufficient supply of petroleum and petroleum products elsewhere than Iran to permit a reduction in purchases from Iran.<\/p>\n<p>\nUnder the law, the US president must periodically issue a \u201cdetermination\u201d on whether there is sufficient supply in the market from non-Iranian sources for countries to significantly cut their Iranian purchases.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe administration\u2019s renewed sanctions are set to come into effect on Nov. 5.<\/p>\n<p>\nUnder US law, Washington can sanction the financial institutions of foreign countries that fail to significantly reduce their purchases of Iranian oil and petroleum products.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe purpose of the law, which came into effect during the Obama administration, was to put pressure on Iran to curtail its nuclear program by forcing its major oil customers to reduce their purchases.<\/p>\n<p>\nThree of Iran\u2019s five largest buyers of crude \u2014 China, India and Turkey \u2014 have resisted calls by Washington to end their oil purchases outright.<\/p>\n<p>\nThis week South Korea asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for \u201cmaximum flexibility\u201d on its request for a waiver to prevent companies there from being hit by the sanctions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON: US National Security Adviser John Bolton said the administration of President Donald Trump wants sanctions on Iran\u2019s crude exports to strain Tehran, but does not want to harm countries that depend on the oil.
