{"id":20775,"date":"2018-11-02T06:23:21","date_gmt":"2018-11-02T06:23:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=20775"},"modified":"2018-11-02T06:23:21","modified_gmt":"2018-11-02T06:23:21","slug":"un-asias-cities-face-mounting-food-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=20775","title":{"rendered":"UN: Asia&#8217;s cities face mounting food challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"134\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Hundreds of millions of children and adults in Asia&#8217;s rapidly expanding cities are undernourished, and will remain so without &#8220;inclusive, sustainable and nutrition-sensitive&#8221; urban planning, offiicals from the United Nations said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The Asia-Pacific region has the world&#8217;s highest rate of urbanisation, while also being home to more than half the world&#8217;s 821 million undernourished people, four UN agencies said in a report released in Bangkok.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;Progress in reducing undernourishment has slowed tremendously,&#8221; said the regional heads of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the UN Children&#8217;s Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the World Health Organization (WHO).<\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"4828071338001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>The future of food: Exploring Agtech farming | Counting the Cost<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;As migration from rural to urban areas continues apace, particularly involving poorer families, urban malnutrition is a challenge facing many countries,&#8221; they said in a statement.<\/p>\n<h2>Salt, fat, sugar<\/h2>\n<p>World hunger rose in 2017 for a third consecutive year due to conflict and climate change, jeopardising a global goal to end the scourge by 2030, the United Nations said in an earlier report.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, more than one in eight adults is now obese, with the Asia-Pacific region recording the fastest growing prevalence of childhood obesity, as people eat more processed foods with high levels of salt, fat and sugar.<\/p>\n<p>China and India, the world&#8217;s most populous countries, are expected to account for more than a fourth of the projected growth in the global urban population by 2050, with about 690 million more people moving to their cities.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, urbanisation has been seen as a sign of social and economic transformation, associated with higher standards of living, including better health and nutrition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, if not managed well, rapid urbanisation can also lead to dysfunctional food systems, resulting in undernutrition and obesity occurring within the same city or even the same household,&#8221; the report noted.<\/p>\n<h2>Growth in slums<\/h2>\n<p>The challenge is exacerbated by poor living conditions. About one-third of the urban population in the region is living in slums with limited access to welfare benefits or safety nets, which affects their food security, nutrition and livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p>Urban food policy in the region must take into account transport, infrastructure, housing, education, and water and sanitation for greater impact, the report noted.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Urban planners must become new nutrition partners,&#8221; it said. &#8220;The world cannot meet the 2030 target of zero hunger if Asia and the Pacific is not leading the way.
