The blockade started on June 5, 2017, as is now reflected below.<\/p>\n<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"117.639039504\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-states.html\">US<\/a> is ratcheting up pressure on Saudi Arabia to restore relations with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/qatar.html\">Qatar<\/a>, Bloomberg has reported, as the kingdom comes under increasing international scrutiny for its role in the killing of journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/profile-jamal-khashoggi-saudi-writer-missing-turkey-181007184026645.html\">Jamal Khashoggi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Washington&#8217;s thrust is aimed at resolving the more than year-long\u00a0political and economic isolation imposed on Qatar by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/saudi-arabia.html\">Saudi Arabia<\/a> and three other Arab states,\u00a0Bloomberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-10-29\/u-s-is-said-to-boost-pressure-on-saudi-arabia-over-qatar-yemen\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> on Monday, citing three\u00a0unnamed sources said to be familiar with the US efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Saudi Arabia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/bahrain.html\">Bahrain<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/egypt.html\">Egypt<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-arab-emirates.html\">United Arab Emirates<\/a> severed political and economic ties with Qatar in June 2017, imposing\u00a0a land, sea and air <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/06\/qatar-diplomatic-crisis-latest-updates-170605105550769.html\">embargo<\/a> on the small Gulf state, which is home to a major US airbase.<\/p>\n<p><span>The quartet accused Qatar of &#8220;supporting terrorism&#8221;,\u00a0a charge it vehemently denies, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/06\/arab-states-issue-list-demands-qatar-crisis-170623022133024.html\">issued<\/a><span>\u00a0a list of 13 demands\u00a0it said Doha would have to meet to end the crisis.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Last week, Saudi\u00a0Crown Prince and de-facto ruler\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/2017\/06\/profile-saudi-crown-prince-mohammed-bin-salman-170621130040539.html\">Mohammed bin Salman<\/a>\u00a0praised Qatar&#8217;s economy in a rare <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/saudi-crown-prince-praises-qatar-economy-differences-181024152725615.html\">conciliatory remark<\/a> about the Gulf state.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bin Salman is under heavy pressure over his possible role in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/jamal-khashoggi-case-latest-updates-181010133542286.html\">assassination<\/a> of\u00a0Khashoggi inside Saudi Arabia&#8217;s consulate in Istanbul on October 2.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/qatar-benefit-khashoggi-fallout-analysts-181025055033110.html\">suggested<\/a> the ongoing fallout over the case, which has attracted international media and intense political scrutiny,\u00a0<span>may result in Saudi Arabia being pressured into changing course in a number of foreign policy areas, including the blockade of Qatar.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Pressure over Yemen<\/h2>\n<p>According to one of the sources contacted by Bloomberg, US President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2016\/11\/profile-president-donald-trump-161109050153947.html\">Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s administration is also pushing for Saudi officials to resolve the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/12\/yemen-civil-war-ali-abdullah-saleh-death-171204163618674.html\">war in Yemen<\/a>, a conflict which has sparked the world&#8217;s worst humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n<p><span>The conflict in Yemen, the Arab world&#8217;s poorest country, began with the 2014 takeover of the capital, Sanaa, by Houthi rebels, who toppled the internationally recognised government of President\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/middleeast\/2012\/02\/2012219133034774204.html\">Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi<\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A Saudi-UAE coalition allied with the government has been fighting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/houthis.html\">Houthis<\/a> since 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A UN report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/accuses-saudi-uae-alliance-war-crimes-yemen-180828064317307.html\">published<\/a> in August said there were &#8220;reasonable grounds&#8221; to believe all parties to the conflict have &#8220;committed\u00a0a substantial number of violations of international humanitarian law&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The possible violations include\u00a0<span>deadly air raids, rampant sexual violence, and the recruitment of child soldiers, the report said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>More than 10,000 civilians have been killed during the conflict, while<\/span><span>\u00a0nearly two-thirds of Yemen&#8217;s 27 million people are now reliant on aid and over eight million are at risk of starvation, according to the UN.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Correction 30\/10\/2019: An earlier version of this article stated that Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the UAE severed ties with Qatar in July 2017.
