The US<\/a> is ratcheting up pressure on Saudi Arabia to restore relations with Qatar<\/a>, Bloomberg has reported, as the kingdom comes under increasing international scrutiny for its role in the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Washington’s thrust is aimed at resolving the more than year-long\u00a0political and economic isolation imposed on Qatar by Saudi Arabia<\/a> and three other Arab states,\u00a0Bloomberg reported<\/a> on Monday, citing three\u00a0unnamed sources said to be familiar with the US efforts.<\/p>\n

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain<\/a>, Egypt<\/a> and the United Arab Emirates<\/a> severed political and economic ties with Qatar in June 2017, imposing\u00a0a land, sea and air embargo<\/a> on the small Gulf state, which is home to a major US airbase.<\/p>\n

The quartet accused Qatar of “supporting terrorism”,\u00a0a charge it vehemently denies, and issued<\/a>\u00a0a list of 13 demands\u00a0it said Doha would have to meet to end the crisis.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Last week, Saudi\u00a0Crown Prince and de-facto ruler\u00a0Mohammed bin Salman<\/a>\u00a0praised Qatar’s economy in a rare conciliatory remark<\/a> about the Gulf state.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Bin Salman is under heavy pressure over his possible role in the assassination<\/a> of\u00a0Khashoggi inside Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Istanbul on October 2.<\/p>\n

Analysts have suggested<\/a> the ongoing fallout over the case, which has attracted international media and intense political scrutiny,\u00a0may result in Saudi Arabia being pressured into changing course in a number of foreign policy areas, including the blockade of Qatar.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pressure over Yemen<\/h2>\n

According to one of the sources contacted by Bloomberg, US President Donald Trump<\/a>‘s administration is also pushing for Saudi officials to resolve the ongoing war in Yemen<\/a>, a conflict which has sparked the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n

The conflict in Yemen, the Arab world’s poorest country, began with the 2014 takeover of the capital, Sanaa, by Houthi rebels, who toppled the internationally recognised government of President\u00a0<\/span>Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Saudi-UAE coalition allied with the government has been fighting the Houthis<\/a> since 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n

A UN report published<\/a> in August said there were “reasonable grounds” to believe all parties to the conflict have “committed\u00a0a substantial number of violations of international humanitarian law”.<\/p>\n

The possible violations include\u00a0deadly air raids, rampant sexual violence, and the recruitment of child soldiers, the report said.<\/span><\/p>\n

More than 10,000 civilians have been killed during the conflict, while<\/span>\u00a0nearly two-thirds of Yemen’s 27 million people are now reliant on aid and over eight million are at risk of starvation, according to the UN.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
