{"id":20225,"date":"2018-10-29T09:22:47","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T09:22:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=20225"},"modified":"2018-10-29T09:22:47","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T09:22:47","slug":"bangladesh-court-jails-ex-pm-zia-for-seven-years-for-corruption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=20225","title":{"rendered":"Bangladesh court jails ex-PM Zia for seven years for corruption"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"80.3027387121\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/bangladesh.html\">Bangladesh<\/a> court on Monday sentenced <span>opposition leader<\/span>\u00a0and former Prime Minister\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/asia\/2008\/12\/200812299619728344.html\">Khaleda Zia<\/a> to another seven years in prison on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/issues\/corruption.html\">corruption<\/a> charges that her supporters say are politically motivated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>Judge Md Akhtaruzaman on Monday found her guilty of misuse of power as prime minister in collecting $375,000 for the Zia Charitable Trust Fund from unknown sources in a court in Dhaka. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Zia was absent in court as she is currently hospitalised while <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/02\/khaleda-zia-jailed-years-corruption-case-180208083811505.html\">serving a prison term<\/a> of five years in a separate case. She was <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/02\/khaleda-zia-jailed-years-corruption-case-180208083811505.html\">sentenced<\/a>\u00a0to five years for embezzling funds for an orphanage.<\/p>\n<p>The judge also sentenced three others to seven years in jail each for collecting the money from undeclared sources for the trust named after Zia&#8217;s late husband and\u00a0former President Ziaur Rahman.<\/p>\n<p>In February, Tarique Rahman, Zia&#8217;s elder son and heir apparent, and four others were also sentenced to 10 years in the case.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Rahman was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/bangladesh-court-sentences-19-death-2004-attack-case-181009111251124.html\"> sentenced to life imprisonment<\/a> over a 2004 deadly attack on current <span>Prime Minister<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/sheikh-hasina-141021135754822.html\">Sheikh Hasina<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span>Rahman, who is the acting chairman of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has been living in exile in London since 2008.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>BNP has accused the ruling Awami League party of running a\u00a0<span>political vendetta against BNP leadership in advance of parliamentary elections due at the end of the year.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Bangladesh court on Monday sentenced opposition leader\u00a0and former Prime Minister\u00a0Khaleda Zia to another seven years in prison on corruption charges that her supporters say are politically motivated.
