I am the prime minister and I have the majority,&#8221; Wickremesinghe told local media. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;According to the constitution, I&#8217;m the prime minister. That [ousting] is not legal.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Sirisena, who was health minister under Rajapaksa from 2010 to 2014, joined forces with Wickremesinghe to defeat the former president in elections in January 2015. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He was elected a<span>s president largely thanks to the backing of Wickremesinghe&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><span>United National Party (UNP).<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5831167428001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1.5\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"4.5\">\n<td readability=\"6\">\n<p>WATCH: Rajapaksa leads Sri Lanka protests, calls for government change (2:07)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>But earlier on Friday, Sirisensa&#8217;s United People&#8217;s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) had said it would quit the ruling coalition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>The developments bring an end to a coalition government that was formed more than three years ago on promises of economic reform and accountability for alleged atrocities committed during Rajapaksa&#8217;s 10-year rule at the close of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/sri-lanka.html\">Sri Lanka<\/a><span>&#8216;s bloody civil war.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Instability and uncertainty&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Al Jazeera&#8217;s Minelle Fernandez, reporting from Colombo, said Rajapaksa&#8217;s shock appointment has brought uncertainty to Sri Lanka amid questions whether the president has the power to dismiss the prime minister.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;There was no inkling that this might happen. It was only after the swearing-in that we started seeing videos and pictures of the ceremony,&#8221; she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mangala Samaraweera, the finance minister of the outgoing government, argued that <\/span>Rajapaksa&#8217;s appointment was a violation of the constitution, which was amended in 2015 to curtail the president&#8217;s powers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is an anti-democratic coup,&#8221; Samaraweera wrote on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>The question of who remained prime minister was ultimately up to the parliament, analysts said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This has to be resolved on the floor of the parliament,&#8221; said Gehan Gunatilleke, a human rights lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The important question here is whether the prime minister enjoys the confidence of the parliament,&#8221; he told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now this happened late on a Friday evening. And there is a sense this was timed so the [Sirisena-bloc] gets a few days <span>before parliament reconvenes\u00a0<span>to get the required numbers<\/span> <\/span> .&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span>Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu<\/span>, executive director at the Centre for Policy Alternatives, a Colombo-based think-tank, said Rajapaksa &#8220;would not have made the decision if he did not have the numbers&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;We are in a bit of a grey area at the moment. Until a new government is sworn in, there will be a certain amount of instability and uncertainty.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Mahinda Amaraweera, a presidential aide, told The Associated Press news agency that Rajapaksa has the majority needed in the 225-member parliament to run a stable government.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span><span>Strained relations<\/span> <\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Relations between Sirisena and Wickremesinghe have soured since their parties suffered humiliating losses to Rajapaksa&#8217;s party in February&#8217;s local council elections.<\/p>\n<p>The pair have disagreed over economic policy and day-to-day administration of the government. Last week, they reportedly clashed during a cabinet session over plans to lease a container terminal to neighbouring India.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Sirisena reneged on a pledge not to run for re-election, sparking tensions with Wickremesinghe who is believed to have his own presidential ambitions.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sirisena is also thought to be behind a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/04\/sri-lanka-pm-ranil-wickremesinghe-survives-confidence-motion-180404173714092.html\">failed attempt<\/a>\u00a0to impeach Wickremesinghe in April, when 122 legislators in the 225-member parliament voted to back the now-sacked prime minister.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The ruling coalition has been further strained in recent days by strong criticism from Sirisena and his allies that ministers from Wickremesinghe&#8217;s party did not act properly in investigating an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/sri-lanka-arrests-top-policeman-plot-kill-president-181026070306999.html\">alleged assassination plot<\/a>\u00a0to kill the president and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the new prime minister&#8217;s younger brother.<\/p>\n<p>Rajapaksa, who served as president from 2005 to 2015, put down the decades-old Tamil Tiger separatist struggle in May 2009 through a military assault that killed up to 40,000 ethnic Tamil civilians, according to rights groups.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>His government was also accused of corruption and murdering political opponents.<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>Sirisena had pledged accountability for war atrocities, but has faced international criticism for being slow to deliver on justice.<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>International rights groups have called for the prosecution of both the military and the Tigers, who were notorious for suicide bombings and enlisting child soldiers.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been sworn in as prime minister after the country&#8217;s president sacked incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe, in a surprise move that threatens political turmoil in the Indian Ocean nation.
