{"id":19542,"date":"2018-10-23T15:23:11","date_gmt":"2018-10-23T15:23:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=19542"},"modified":"2018-10-23T15:23:11","modified_gmt":"2018-10-23T15:23:11","slug":"khashoggi-killing-a-political-murder-erdogan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=19542","title":{"rendered":"Khashoggi killing a &#8216;political murder&#8217;: Erdogan"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"164.759259259\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><strong>Turkey, Istanbul &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0Turkish President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/spotlight\/turkeyelection\/2011\/05\/2011526121054590355.html\">Recep Tayyip Erdogan<\/a> has said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/jamal-khashoggi-case-latest-updates-181010133542286.html\">murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi<\/a> at the kingdom&#8217;s consulate in Istanbul was planned by Saudi officials days in advance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>Addressing legislators from his Justice and Development Party (AK Party)\u00a0<span>on Tuesday<\/span>, Erdogan detailed Khashoggi&#8217;s disappearance and murder but stopped short of accusing Saudi royals of the\u00a0<\/span><span>&#8220;savage&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span>killing that has caused global outrage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;On September 28, Khashoggi arrived at the Saudi Arabian consulate for him to sort out his wedding paperwork,&#8221; Erdogan said during the speech in the Turkish parliament in the capital, Ankara.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It seems that at that time they [Saudi Arabian officials] started to plan a roadmap for his murder.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He added that some Saudi officials left Turkey and travelled to Saudi Arabia, &#8220;indicating they planned the murder&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Khashoggi, 59, a Washington Post columnist and critic of the powerful Saudi Crown Prince <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/mohammed-bin-salman-dark-side-saudi-arabia-crown-prince-181015123719153.html\">Mohammed bin Salman<\/a>, disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate on October 2.<\/p>\n<p>So far, Erdogan had remained largely silent on the case, although unnamed Turkish officials have leaked information about the murder, including information about a 15-member Saudi\u00a0&#8220;assassination team&#8221; who flew into Istanbul on two chartered planes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of intense global pressure, Saudi Arabia admitted last week that Khashoggi was killed inside its Istanbul consulate on October 2 as a result of a &#8220;fistfight&#8221; during an interrogation.<\/p>\n<p><span>Saudi authorities arrested 18 people in connection with the killing and fired top security officials considered close to bin Salman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Erdogan called the killing a &#8220;political murder&#8221;, adding that international investigators should be included in the probe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Turkish leader went on to call the killing &#8220;savage&#8221;, adding that Ankara would continue its investigation until all questions have been answered.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Why did they [the Saudi team] come to Istanbul, on instruction by whom?&#8221; Erdogan asked, adding that Saudi Arabia should make clear why it did not let investigators into the consulate until days later.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Where is the body?&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Galip Dalay, visiting scholar at the University of Oxford, stressed the significance of Erdogan&#8217;s speech.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The most important thing is that Erdogan confirmed everything we sort of heard through other channels,&#8221; he told Al Jazeera. &#8220;However, now it&#8217;s no longer attributed to unnamed Turkish officials, but it&#8217;s the president of Turkey who has confirmed what has happened,&#8221; Dalay said<span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Erdogan also demanded answers on what happened to Khashoggi&#8217;s body, mentioning reports that a local cooperator allegedly disposed of it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Where is the body? There are claims his body has been given to a local person, but who is this local person?&#8221; Erdogan asked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nobody is allowed to think this case will come to an end without answering all these questions,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>The Turkish president also said Saudi Arabia was taking the right steps by working with Ankara on the investigation and carrying out the 18 arrests.<\/p>\n<p>Dalay, who is also\u00a0a non-resident fellow at Brookings Institution Doha, underlined Erdogan&#8217;s &#8220;distinction&#8221; in his speech between King Salman and his son, bin Salman.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everything that Erdogan provided pointed towards MBS, without naming the crown prince specifically,&#8221; said Dalay, adding that the Turkish president was clearly trying to prevent a full-blown crisis between Ankara and Riyadh.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, speaking in an exclusive interview with Fox News, Saudi Arabia&#8217;s Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said Khashoggi&#8217;s killing inside the consulate was &#8220;a terrible tragedy&#8221; and that MBS had nothing to do with it.<\/p>\n<p>Taha Ozhan, research director at the Ankara Institute, told Al Jazeera that he thought Erdogan was taking the right steps.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Saudis know very well what Turkey knows, and what Erdogan has been doing is the right thing, namely asking the Saudis for full cooperation in this case.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Turkey, Istanbul &#8211;\u00a0Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the kingdom&#8217;s consulate in Istanbul was planned by Saudi officials days in advance.
