{"id":19322,"date":"2018-10-21T17:23:43","date_gmt":"2018-10-21T17:23:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=19322"},"modified":"2018-10-21T17:23:43","modified_gmt":"2018-10-21T17:23:43","slug":"maldives-president-abdulla-yameen-loses-bid-to-annul-poll-result","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=19322","title":{"rendered":"Maldives President Abdulla Yameen loses bid to annul poll result"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"180.937487714\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/maldives.html\">Maldives<\/a>&#8216; top court has unanimously rejected a bid by outgoing President Abdulla Yameen to annul results of a presidential election held in September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The Supreme Court said on Sunday the president failed to substantiate claims of fraud and found there was\u00a0&#8220;no constitutional basis to overturn the election and order a new poll&#8221;, according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov.mv\/mediafolder\/2018-sc-c-44(1).pdf\" target=\"_blank\">court document<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Yameen, who presided over a five-year crackdown targeting political rivals, media and rights activists, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/maldives-opposition-takes-early-lead-tense-presidential-poll-180923150807023.html\">lost the September 23 election<\/a> by a margin of 16 percent to opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in an outcome hailed as a victory for democracy in the Indian Ocean archipelago.<\/p>\n<p>The 59-year-old leader initially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/abdulla-yameen-concedes-defeat-malidives-presidential-election-180924074225746.html\">conceded defeat<\/a>, but later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/maldives-defeated-president-challenges-election-result-181010093101354.html\">filed a complaint<\/a>\u00a0at the Supreme Court, alleging elections officials used &#8220;disappearing ink&#8221;, ring-shaped pens, and fraudulent ballot papers to rig the vote in his opponent&#8217;s favour.<\/p>\n<p>Judges, however, said the president&#8217;s lawyers did not present adequate evidence to back fraud claims.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmed Shareef, chairman of the elections commission, hailed the ruling in a Twitter post and thanked &#8220;all who stood with the people&#8217;s decision&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en-gb\" readability=\"6.41666666667\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We appreciate the work of EC legal team, well done! Four of the five members of the commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/southasia\/2018\/10\/4-5-maldives-election-commissioners-flee-alleging-threats-181011065646286.html\">left the country over the threats<\/a>, but have now returned.<\/p>\n<p><span>Ibrahim Muaz Ali, spokesperson for Yameen, could not be reached for a comment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;New and positive era&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Solih, the president-elect, said the Maldivian people &#8220;can finally enjoy clarity&#8221; regarding the election outcome after weeks of uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, he condemned Yameen&#8217;s complaint as &#8220;frivolous from the start&#8221;, urging the president to accept the people&#8217;s will and facilitate a smooth transition of power.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mariya Ahmed Didi, spokesperson for the president-elect, said she was &#8220;pleased&#8221; by the court verdict.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The case was based on conjecture and conspiracy theory. (@ali_shamin) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ali_shamin\/status\/1053976660792434689?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 21, 2018<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Abdulla Khaleel, a ruling party legislator, said he respected the verdict in a Twitter post, adding: &#8220;We move further with the reality of the day&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmed Siddeeq, deputy home minister, said the ruling had brought &#8220;deep despair&#8221; and urged Yameen&#8217;s supporters to be brave.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-states.html\">United States<\/a> welcomed the court ruling, with Robert Hilton, a top diplomat assigned to the Maldives, saying he looked forward to working with Solih after his inauguration, expected to take place on November 11.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a new and positive era for the Maldives,&#8221; he said in a Twitter post.<\/p>\n<h2>Travel ban<\/h2>\n<p>The president&#8217;s court challenge came despite announcements from a wide range of countries congratulating Solih on the result, including the US, India and the UK, as well as from Yameen&#8217;s allies &#8211; China and Saudi Arabia &#8211; who financed his expansive infrastructure drive over the past five years.<\/p>\n<p>In a televised speech on Wednesday, Yameen &#8211; who has vowed to stay on in office until the end of his term, which he says is on November 17 &#8211; said he was preparing to step down and had &#8220;no regrets&#8221; about his actions as president.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What I found most difficult, or what I was incapable of, was learning about the people,&#8221; he said in his &#8220;final address&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the opposition coalition has asked the police to bar Yameen from leaving the country citing complaints and an investigation into allegations of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/issues\/corruption.html\">corruption<\/a>\u00a0against him.<\/p>\n<p>These include an anti-corruption watchdog investigation into allegations the president received $1m of cash embezzled from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/issues\/tourism.html\">tourism<\/a> revenues. Meanwhile, an anti-money laundering body has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/maldives-president-received-15m-hard-cash-vote-180930083126271.html\">alleged<\/a> Yameen received $1.5m in hard currency days before the September election.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Speaking outside the Supreme Court, Hassan Latheef, chair of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party, reiterated a call on the police to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/maldives-opposition-seeks-bar-president-leaving-country-181017170357035.html\">bar the president from leaving the country<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are huge allegations against him, of theft and money-laundering. They must be investigated immediately.
