{"id":19248,"date":"2018-10-20T22:23:01","date_gmt":"2018-10-20T22:23:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=19248"},"modified":"2018-10-20T22:23:01","modified_gmt":"2018-10-20T22:23:01","slug":"thousands-march-to-support-independence-vote-in-taiwan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=19248","title":{"rendered":"Thousands march to support independence vote in Taiwan"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"140.200466978\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>Thousands of people have rallied in Taiwan&#8217;s capital to call for a referendum on independence, in the <span>first major protest calling for a popular vote since the self-ruling island became a democracy more than 20 years ago.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The march on Saturday through Taipei took place as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/china.html\">China<\/a> has stepped up its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/03\/china-beautiful-reunification-taiwan-180305160655195.html\">claims<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/taiwan.html\">Taiwan<\/a>, which Beijing considers as part of its own territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>&#8220;China&#8217;s aggression can only push us to defend ourselves,&#8221; <span>a female protester told Al Jazeera.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>&#8220;We will safeguard our right to self-determination.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span>Crowds gathered outside the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) headquarters in Taipei, chanting slogans such as &#8220;Want referendum!&#8221; and &#8220;Oppose annexation!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/10\/20\/23f08439aed947e6a0f3474be36902ea_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"2\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/10\/20\/23f08439aed947e6a0f3474be36902ea_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"4\">\n<td class=\"caption\">Taiwan has its own judiciary, political system as well as its own currency [AP Photo\/Chiang Ying-ying]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>China and Taiwan have been ruled separately since the civil war on mainland China in 1949. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Taiwan considers itself a sovereign state, with its own currency, judiciary and political system.\u00a0<\/span>Beijing, however, sees Taiwan as part of China and has warned it would use force to reunite Taipei with the mainland if necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In recent years, Beijing has increased <span>diplomatic, economic and military pressure<\/span>\u00a0on the government of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in an attempt to force her to agree that the island is a part of &#8220;one China&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It has also successfully pressured global firms to list Taiwan as part of China on their company websites.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Fan Yun, a member of\u00a0 the Social Democratic Party, told Al Jazeera that<\/span>\u00a0&#8220;a referendum is a democratic way to tell China and to tell the whole world that, actually, we want to be an independent country&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Organised by the Formosa Alliance, which is backed by two former Taiwanese presidents who support independence, the protest amounted to a large-scale demand for a public vote on whether to formally declare Taiwan&#8217;s independence from China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;We want to tell China to stop bullying Taiwan,&#8221; Alliance leader Kuo Pei-horng, 63, told the crowd, AFP news agency reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;Taiwanese people want to be their own master,&#8221; he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Organisers said that more than 100,000 people turned out for the march, although local police put the figure at 10,000, according to news agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Protesters also challenged Tsai&#8217;s stance on a potential independence referendum.
