{"id":19026,"date":"2018-10-19T02:22:54","date_gmt":"2018-10-19T02:22:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=19026"},"modified":"2018-10-19T02:22:54","modified_gmt":"2018-10-19T02:22:54","slug":"saudi-princes-aide-was-at-consulate-when-khashoggi-vanished","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=19026","title":{"rendered":"Saudi prince&#8217;s aide was &#8216;at consulate&#8217; when Khashoggi vanished"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"151.544045677\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">A member of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman&#8217;s entourage walked into the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul just before writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/jamal-khashoggi.html\">Jamal Khashoggi<\/a> vanished there, according to a leaked surveillance photo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>The man, identified by Turkish officials as Maher Abdulaziz Mutreb, has been photographed in the background during the prince&#8217;s trips to the US, France, and Spain this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>Turkish officials say he flew into Istanbul on a private jet along with an &#8220;autopsy expert&#8221; on October 2 and left that night. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That was the same day Khashoggi, a columnist for The Washington Post who wrote critically of the prince&#8217;s rise to power, entered the consulate and was not seen again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Turkish press reports &#8211; which commentators suspect are based on deliberate government leaks &#8211; have suggested that Khashoggi was killed by a 15-person &#8220;assassination team&#8221; who flew in on two chartered planes and then interrogated, tortured, and killed him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Saudi Arabia has called the allegations &#8220;baseless&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>&#8216;Head of execution squad&#8217;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>On Thursday, the pro-government Sabah newspaper first published the images of Mutreb, showing him walking past police barricades at the consulate at 9:55 am local time with several men trailing behind him. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Khashoggi arrived at the consulate several hours later at 1:14 pm local time, then disappeared while his fiancee waited outside for him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5850017960001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>WATCH: Who are the Saudi suspects in the Khashoggi case? (1:46)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>A Wednesday report by the pro-government newspaper Yeni Safak, citing what it described as an audio recording of Khashoggi&#8217;s killing, said a Saudi team immediately accosted the 60-year-old journalist after he entered the consulate, cutting off his fingers and later decapitating him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Previously leaked surveillance footage showed consular vehicles moving from the consulate to the consul general&#8217;s official residence, some 2km away, a little under two hours after Khashoggi walked inside. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The<strong> <\/strong>pictures published by Sabah showed an image of Mutreb at 4:53 pm local time at the consul&#8217;s home, then at 5:15 pm checking out of a hotel. He later cleared an airport security check at 5:58 pm before flying out of Istanbul.<\/p>\n<p><span>The report identified him as the alleged head of the 15-man &#8220;execution squad&#8221;. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/saudi-arabia.html\">Saudi Arabia<\/a> has not responded to repeated requests for comment over recent days, including on Thursday over Mutreb&#8217;s identification.<\/p>\n<p><span>Mutreb could not be reached for comment immediately, the news agency said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>Ties to Prince Mohammed<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The New York Times has meanwhile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/16\/world\/middleeast\/khashoggi-saudi-prince.html\">reported<\/a> that at least nine of the 15 suspects worked for the Saudi security services, military or other government ministries.<\/p>\n<p>Four of them, including Mutreb, are linked to Prince Mohammed&#8217;s security detail, while a fifth man is a high-level forensic doctor, the Times said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>The Times identified the suspects with links to Prince Mohammed as Abdulaziz Mohammed al-Hawsawi &#8211; a member of the security team that travels with the prince- Thaar Ghaleb al-Harbi, and Muhammed Saad Alzahrani.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Al-Harbi and Alzahrani have the same names as two people who have been identified as members of the Saudi Royal Guard, the Times said.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The forensic expert was named as Salah al-Tubaigy, who the Times said identified himself on his Twitter account as the head of the Saudi Scientific Council of Forensics. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He also held high positions in the Interior Ministry and the kingdom&#8217;s top medical school, the report said.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a separate report late on Tuesday, the Washington Post said 11 of the 15 people which Turkey alleged were involved in Khashoggi&#8217;s killing have ties to the Saudi security services, including some who claim to be with the Royal Guard.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A member of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman&#8217;s entourage walked into the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul just before writer Jamal Khashoggi vanished there, according to a leaked surveillance photo.
