{"id":19022,"date":"2018-10-19T02:22:41","date_gmt":"2018-10-19T02:22:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=19022"},"modified":"2018-10-19T02:22:41","modified_gmt":"2018-10-19T02:22:41","slug":"sudan-former-president-abdulrahman-siwar-al-dahab-dies-aged-83","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=19022","title":{"rendered":"Sudan: former President Abdulrahman Siwar al-Dahab dies aged 83"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"98.8864468864\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Former Sudanese president Abdulrahman Siwar al-Dahab has died in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/saudi-arabia.html\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>, Sudan&#8217;s state news agency (SUNA) reports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The 83-year-old former leader of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/sudan.html\">Sudan<\/a> died in a military hospital in <span>Riyadh<\/span>, the agency said on Thursday, without providing further details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span><span>Described by his contemporaries as a deeply religious man who was &#8220;noted\u00a0<\/span><span>for his high moral behaviour&#8221;,\u00a0<span>Siwar al-Dahab<\/span>\u00a0was also known for his &#8220;sense of duty and nationalism&#8221;.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>He was a former military officer, who served as defence minister before he led the removal of Gaafar Nimeiry in 1985; Nimeiry had been president since 1969.<\/p>\n<p><span>Expelled by <span>Nimeiry\u00a0<\/span>from Sudan with no explanation in 1972,\u00a0<span>Siwar al-Dahab<\/span>\u00a0moved to Qatar where he served as adviser to the then-emir,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2016\/10\/qatar-sheikh-khalifa-bin-hamad-al-thani-passes-161023191234162.html\">Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani<\/a><span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He was called back to Sudan by Nimeiry in the 1980s and became deputy chief of staff then later chief of staff and minister of defence, the country&#8217;s most senior military officer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In 1985, popular demonstrations erupted, calling for the end of the Nimeiry regime; Siwar al-Dahab, along with a group of senior military officers, removed Nimeiry and declared the Transitional Military Council which undertook to steer Sudan&#8217;s transitional period.<\/p>\n<p><span>Siwar al-Dahab\u00a0<\/span>promised to hold elections in a year&#8217;s time, a pledge few believed in a country exhausted by civil war.<\/p>\n<p>However, the following year, he handed power over to a newly elected government headed by then Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi.<\/p>\n<p><span>Siwar al-Dahab<\/span>\u00a0then resigned from the political arena, devoting himself entirely to religious issues and becoming chairman of the Khartoum-based Islamic Call Organization.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Sudanese president Abdulrahman Siwar al-Dahab has died in Saudi Arabia, Sudan&#8217;s state news agency (SUNA) reports.
