{"id":18830,"date":"2018-10-17T11:24:12","date_gmt":"2018-10-17T11:24:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=18830"},"modified":"2018-10-17T11:24:12","modified_gmt":"2018-10-17T11:24:12","slug":"dissident-vietnamese-blogger-mother-mushroom-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=18830","title":{"rendered":"Dissident Vietnamese blogger &#8216;Mother Mushroom&#8217; released"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"112.176933766\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/vietnam.html\">Vietnamese<\/a> authorities have released dissident blogger Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh, also known under her pseudonym &#8220;Mother Mushroom&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Quynh, 39, was freed from jail on Wednesday and put on a plane to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-states.html\">United States<\/a> where her mother and children live.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;Quynh was sent to the US earlier today,&#8221; a Vietnamese government official confirmed to AFP news agency, speaking on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n<p><span>Quynh, o<\/span>ne of Vietnam&#8217;s most well-known activists, whose recognisable pen name &#8220;Me Nam&#8221; comes from her daughter&#8217;s nickname &#8220;mushroom&#8221;, was jailed in June 2017.<\/p>\n<p>She is an outspoken critic of Vietnam&#8217;s one-party state and gained notoriety with her writing about the environment, politics and deaths in police custody.<\/p>\n<p>Quynh became a cause celebre and received an International Woman of Courage Award in 2017, presented to her in absentia by US First Lady Melania Trump.<\/p>\n<p>She was arrested in October 2016 after visiting a fellow activist in prison and even from jail she remained steadfast in her opposition to the communist government.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>Her arrest led to angry responses from the US, the European Union, the United Nations and human rights organisations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The overly broad, ill-defined scope of this law makes it all too easy to quash any kind of dissenting views and to arbitrarily detain individuals who dare to criticize government policies,&#8221; former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra\u2019ad Al Hussein <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/NewsEvents\/Pages\/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=20679&#038;LangID=E\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We urge Vietnamese authorities to stop harassing independent bloggers, who represent the only alternative voice to the country&#8217;s otherwise state-controlled media, and allow all journalists to report without fear of reprisal such as trumped up anti-state charges,&#8221; the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ)<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpj.org\/2016\/10\/prominent-blogger-mother-mushroom-detained-in-viet.php\" target=\"_blank\"> said<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<p>While the Vietnamese authorities have not given a reason for the release of Quynh, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/mattis-tours-contaminated-vietnam-war-era-agent-orange-site-181017064310136.html\">coincided with a visit<\/a> to Vietnam by US Secretary of Defence Jim Mattis. Mattis is on his second trip to Vietnam this year after visiting Hanoi in January.<\/p>\n<p>Quynh is the second Vietnamese dissident released this year.
