{"id":18448,"date":"2018-10-14T18:25:38","date_gmt":"2018-10-14T18:25:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=18448"},"modified":"2018-10-14T18:25:38","modified_gmt":"2018-10-14T18:25:38","slug":"egypt-sentences-three-to-death-for-attacks-on-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=18448","title":{"rendered":"Egypt sentences three to death for attacks on police"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"90.1619812584\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">A court in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/egypt.html\">Egypt<\/a> has sentenced three people to death for their involvement in the killing of policemen and belonging to an armed group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>The defendants were found guilty by a Cairo criminal court on Sunday of being involved in the killing of 10 policemen, including an officer, between August 2013 and May 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>The charges also included establishing and running an armed group known as Ansar al-Sharia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Both the defence and prosecution have the right to appeal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Four others were sentenced to life imprisonment &#8211; a 25-year term in Egypt &#8211; and seven defendants to 15 years in prison. Nine of the 23 defendants were acquitted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Egyptian courts have issued or confirmed a large number of death sentences in recent weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On Thursday, a military court sentenced 17 people to death for attacks against churches in 2016 and 2017 that killed a total of 74 people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On Monday, four fighters belonging to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/isis-isil.html\">ISIL<\/a> (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant), also referred to as ISIS, were sentenced to death, while on September 8 a court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/egypt-sentences-75-death-rabaa-protests-180908092058638.html\">upheld<\/a> death sentences for 75 people, including leaders of the outlawed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/2017\/06\/muslim-brotherhood-explained-170608091709865.html\">Muslim Brotherhood<\/a> movement.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, armed groups launched a campaign against the government in Egypt after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2016\/06\/profile-egypt-deposed-president-mohamed-morsi-160607074148919.html\">Mohamed Morsi<\/a>, the country&#8217;s first democratically elected leader, was forced out by the military.<\/p>\n<p>The Egyptian military says around 300 suspected jihadists and at least 35 soldiers have been killed since it launched an operation in February against fighters in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/sinai-peninsula.html\">Sinai Peninsula<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A court in Egypt has sentenced three people to death for their involvement in the killing of policemen and belonging to an armed group.
