\nAMMAN: The Palestinian Authority (PA) has expressed concern about what it says are attempts by the UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process to broker a deal between Israel and Hamas behind the PA\u2019s back, a senior Palestinian official told Arab News.<\/p>\n

\nBut the PA does not consider Nickolay Mladenov persona non grata, the official said on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n

\nEarlier, Ahmed Majdalani, a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization\u2019s (PLO) executive committee, said Palestinian officials had told UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that Mladenov was \u201cno longer acceptable\u201d to the PA because he had \u201cgone beyond his role\u201d in seeking agreements between Israel and rival Palestinian faction Hamas, which controls Gaza.<\/p>\n

\nAnnes Sweidan, head of the PLO\u2019s international relations office in Ramallah, told Arab News that Mladenov \u201cisn\u2019t an honest broker, and seems to be working according to the agenda of Hamas, Israel and Qatar with the aim of carrying out the US peace plan by circumventing the Palestinian leadership.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nMladenov is buying into Israeli and US efforts to \u201cease the humanitarian situation rather than the end of the occupation,\u201d Sweidan said.<\/p>\n

\nDiana Buttu, a lawyer and former adviser to the Palestinian negotiating team, said the PA is paying no attention to the humanitarian situation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\u201cThat is the problem. The PA, instead of trying to alleviate the humanitarian disaster deliberately caused by Israel, is exacerbating it and castigating those who try to make life slightly more bearable under Israel\u2019s siege,\u201d she told Arab News.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cIt\u2019s the PA\u2019s job to find a political solution, not the UN\u2019s. The PA leadership treats Palestinians as though they\u2019re political pawns.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nPalestinian officials have said while they are unhappy with Mladenov, boycotting him will not serve a positive purpose.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\u201cThe message has been received and understood, so there\u2019s no need to take it any further,\u201d said the senior Palestinian official.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nGuterres said in a statement that he \u201cfully supports the efforts of\u2026 Mladenov, who has been working tirelessly with all concerned parties\u2026 to change the dynamics in Gaza \u2014 to avoid escalation, to support intra-Palestinian reconciliation and to address all humanitarian issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nGuterres expressed hope that \u201crelieving the humanitarian pressure in Gaza will reduce the tensions that risk a devastating armed conflict in Gaza and create space for the PA and Hamas to engage seriously with Egypt on reconciliation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nHe added: \u201cHowever, any humanitarian response to Gaza\u2019s problems can only be temporary and limited in scope. What is needed is a political breakthrough that will\u2026 progress toward advancing a negotiated two-state solution based on relevant UN resolutions and previous agreements.\u201d Meanwhile, Israeli forces killed two Palestinian protesters in Gaza on Friday.<\/p>\n
