{"id":17896,"date":"2018-10-10T15:26:32","date_gmt":"2018-10-10T15:26:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=17896"},"modified":"2018-10-10T15:26:32","modified_gmt":"2018-10-10T15:26:32","slug":"maldives-president-challenges-election-defeat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=17896","title":{"rendered":"Maldives president challenges election defeat"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"185.090426708\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/maldives.html\">Maldives<\/a> President Abdulla Yameen has filed a court challenge against his election loss, citing a &#8220;lot of complaints from supporters&#8221;, according to a lawyer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The complaint was filed at the island nation&#8217;s Supreme Court on Wednesday, said Mohamed Saleem, the president&#8217;s lawyer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Yameen lost the September 23 election by a 16 percent margin to opposition leader, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, in an outcome hailed as a win for democracy in the crisis-hit Indian Ocean archipelago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The result was widely accepted, including by the United States, China, India, and the European Union.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Yameen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/abdulla-yameen-concedes-defeat-malidives-presidential-election-180924074225746.html\">conceded<\/a> defeat a day after the election, but has since alleged widespread irregularities in the vote. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The president, who says he will stay on in office until the end of his term on November 17, has offered little evidence to back his claim.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5839080664001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>WATCH: Maldives opposition claims presidential election victory (2:27)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Saleem, the president&#8217;s lawyer, told a pro-government television station that Yameen filed a &#8220;constitutional case&#8221; at the top court &#8220;after reviewing a lot of complaints from his supporters about the result of the vote&#8221;. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">He declined to reveal details of the case, saying he will file evidence at the court.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Saleem confirmed submitting the case to Al Jazeera, but did not clarify if the president was seeking to overturn the election results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sgppmmv\/status\/1049955547775004672\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a>\u00a0on Tuesday, the ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) said\u00a0<\/span>it was seeking legal recourse through the courts because the party has &#8220;been overwhelmed with numerous genuine concerns related to the elections, including serious allegations of vote rigging, fraud, malpractice and corruption&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The elections commission has previously dismissed the allegations as &#8220;false&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span>A spokesman for the Supreme Court said judges have not made a decision on accepting the case yet.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span>&#8216;Running out of options&#8217;<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Mariya Ahmed Didi, spokesperson for president-elect Solih, said Yameen must respect the results of the election.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">&#8220;The people&#8217;s word on the matter is final,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Solih, who won the election with more than 58 percent of the vote, was backed at the last minute by a coalition of four opposition parties whose leaders were either in jail or in exile.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Solih has vowed to restore democracy, release dissidents and investigate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/maldives-president-received-15m-hard-cash-vote-180930083126271.html\">allegations of corruption<\/a>\u00a0against Yameen.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmed Mahloof, an opposition politician, said the president&#8217;s latest move showed the &#8220;options are running out&#8221; for him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s in a very tight place right now.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s because many high profile prisoners, including Yameen&#8217;s half-brother former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/maldives-leader-gayoom-freed-bail-week-election-180930150231895.html\">released<\/a> on bail since the election, Mahloof said, while dissidents in exile have started to return.<\/p>\n<p>Mohamed Nasheed, the country&#8217;s first freely elected president whose arrest and jailing in 2015 triggered the Maldives&#8217; protracted crisis, is expected to end his exile in the United Kingdom and return on November 1.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With the tables turning, Mahloof said, Yameen was now facing impeachment through the parliament, where the opposition was hoping to regain its parliamentary majority.<\/p>\n<p>Yameen had stripped a dozen legislators of their seats after they defected to the opposition last year in order to preserve control over the 85-member house. But the Supreme Court reinstated four of the twelve earlier this week, raising hopes that the opposition could prevail in the parliament.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, Mahloof said there was uncertainty about what the top court may do next, as the court was perceived as loyal to the president. He had sent in the army to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/02\/maldives-declares-state-emergency-crisis-deepens-180205153207323.html\">arrest<\/a> two of the court&#8217;s five judges in February, and his party later sacked the pair and appointed judges widely perceived as loyalists to the vacant posts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>Transparency Maldives, an election monitoring group, called Yameen&#8217;s latest move &#8220;troubling&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It noted the Supreme Court in 2013 annulled the results of a first round of voting after Yameen came in second. He later won that election by a margin of 6,000 votes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">&#8220;Although the pre-election environment was marred with serious issues, we note that the election day process was fairly smooth and any issues that were observed on election day were minor and would not affect the outcome of the elections,&#8221; the group&#8217;s executive director Mariyam Shiuna said in a statement to Al Jazeera.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mahloof meanwhile called on the security forces to prepare to defend the election results.<\/p>\n<p>Both the army and the police have previously said they will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/abdulla-yameen-seeks-delay-vote-results-remain-power-180926165001555.html\">uphold<\/a> the results of the vote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maldives President Abdulla Yameen has filed a court challenge against his election loss, citing a &#8220;lot of complaints from supporters&#8221;, according to a lawyer.
