{"id":17874,"date":"2018-10-10T08:29:34","date_gmt":"2018-10-10T08:29:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=17874"},"modified":"2018-10-10T08:29:34","modified_gmt":"2018-10-10T08:29:34","slug":"missing-saudi-writer-khashoggis-fiancee-asks-for-trumps-help","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=17874","title":{"rendered":"Missing Saudi writer Khashoggi&#8217;s fiancee asks for Trump&#8217;s help"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"161.313815188\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The fiancee of missing Saudi journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/profile-jamal-khashoggi-saudi-writer-missing-turkey-181007184026645.html\">Jamal Khashoggi<\/a> has implored US President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2016\/11\/profile-president-donald-trump-161109050153947.html\">Donald Trump<\/a> and First Lady Melania Trump to &#8220;help shed light&#8221; on his disappearance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Hatice Cengiz made the appeal in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/global-opinions\/wp\/2018\/10\/09\/please-president-trump-shed-light-on-my-fiances-disappearance\/?utm_term=.27afacf60162\" target=\"_blank\">essay<\/a> for The Washington Post newspaper on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">A prominent critic of Riyadh, Khashoggi was last seen a week ago entering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/saudi-arabia.html\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>&#8216;s consulate in Istanbul to get documents for his forthcoming marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Turkish sources said they believed Khashoggi was killed inside the diplomatic post, a claim Saudi Arabia has dismissed as &#8220;baseless&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">In her essay, Cengiz said Khashoggi first visited the consulate on September 28 &#8220;despite being somewhat concerned that he could be in danger&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">But he walked in &#8220;because he did not believe that something bad could happen on Turkish soil&#8221;. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">&#8220;It would be a violation of international law to harm, arrest or detain people at a diplomatic mission, he said, and noted that no such thing had ever happened in Turkey&#8217;s history,&#8221; Cengiz wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">After a positive meeting with consular staff who &#8220;welcomed him warmly&#8221;, Khashoggi &#8220;was relaxed&#8221; before his second visit on October 2, she said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span>Cengiz, who waited for him outside, said he never emerged.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;At this time, I implore President Trump and first lady Melania Trump to help shed light on Jamal&#8217;s disappearance,&#8221; Cengiz wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;I also urge Saudi Arabia, especially King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, to show the same level of sensitivity and release CCTV footage from the consulate.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She added: &#8220;Although this incident could potentially fuel a political crisis between the two nations, let us not lose sight of the human aspect of what happened.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>Consulate search<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Cengiz&#8217;s request came as Turkey said it was preparing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/turkey-search-saudi-consulate-jamal-khashoggi-181009143434025.html\">search<\/a> the consulate as part of an investigation to Khashoggi&#8217;s disappearance.<\/p>\n<p><span>A surveillance video image obtained by Turkish newspaper Hurriyet also surfaced on Tuesday showing Khashoggi walking into the consulate in Istanbul&#8217;s upscale 4th Levent neighbourhood.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/10\/10\/8434c97a4ffe4797b43da57a0d2d9db5_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1.5\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/10\/10\/8434c97a4ffe4797b43da57a0d2d9db5_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td class=\"caption\">Turkish sources believe Jamal Khashoggi was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul [CCTV\/Hurriyet via AP]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Meanwhile, The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/saudi-royal-family-planned-khashoggi-hit-ny-times-181010035444430.html\">reported<\/a> top Saudi leaders deployed a 15-man hit squad to lay in wait for the dissident writer. Citing anonymous Turkish officials, the newspaper said the assassination team included a forensic expert who brought a bone saw to dismember Khashoggi&#8217;s body.<\/p>\n<p>Turkish police have previously said a team of 15 Saudis were sent to Istanbul and were in the building at the same time as Khashoggi.<\/p>\n<p><span>Turkish security officials were working to identify the 15 individuals, English-language state broadcaster TRT World reported, adding that Turkish officials believe the Saudis may have taken the consulate&#8217;s CCTV footage with them when they returned to Riyadh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to pro-government daily Sabah, the team arrived in Istanbul on two private planes, one which landed after 03:00 am (00:00 GMT) on Tuesday while the second plane landed around 05:00 pm (14:00 GMT) after Khashoggi entered the consulate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The individuals checked into two hotels close to the consulate, the daily said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Both planes later returned to Riyadh with one stopping in Dubai and the other in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/egypt.html\">Egypt<\/a>, Sabah reported, adding the police were looking into the possibility that Khashoggi was kidnapped.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, The Washington Post &#8211; for whom Khashoggi wrote columns &#8211; reported US intelligence intercepted communications of Saudi officials planning to abduct the writer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Saudis wanted to lure Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia and lay hands on him there,&#8221; the Post quoted a person familiar with the information as saying.<\/p>\n<p>It was not clear whether the Saudis intended to arrest and interrogate Khashoggi or to kill him &#8211; or if the US warned Khashoggi he was a target, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/saudis-lay-in-wait-for-jamal-khashoggi-and-left-turkey-quickly-sources-say\/2018\/10\/09\/0e283e2e-cbc5-11e8-ad0a-0e01efba3cc1_story.html?utm_term=.d7beebd0851b\" target=\"_blank\">source told the newspaper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Khashoggi, who wrote critically for the Post about Crown Prince <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/2017\/06\/profile-saudi-crown-prince-mohammed-bin-salman-170621130040539.html\">Mohammed bin Salman<\/a>&#8216;s rise to power, had been in a self-imposed exile in the US since last year, fearful of the prince&#8217;s low tolerance for criticism.<\/p>\n<p>Cengiz wrote that he also sought to become a US citizen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;Although my hope slowly fades away each passing day, I remain confident that Jamal is still alive,&#8221; she wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;Perhaps I&#8217;m simply trying to hide from the thought that I have lost a great man whose love I had earned.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The fiancee of missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi has implored US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump to &#8220;help shed light&#8221; on his disappearance.
