{"id":17844,"date":"2018-10-10T01:23:53","date_gmt":"2018-10-10T01:23:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=17844"},"modified":"2018-10-10T01:23:53","modified_gmt":"2018-10-10T01:23:53","slug":"qatari-fuel-enters-gaza-to-avert-humanitarian-disaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=17844","title":{"rendered":"Qatari fuel enters Gaza to avert &#8216;humanitarian disaster&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"142.023997474\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Qatari-bought fuel arrived at the Gaza Strip&#8217;s only power station after entering through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/israel.html\">Israel<\/a>, sources said, in a bid to alleviate conditions in the besieged enclave and stem any escalation in Israeli-Palestinian violence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">A Palestinian source at the <span>Karam<\/span><span>\u00a0Abu\u00a0<\/span><span>Salem<\/span><span>\u00a0border crossing, also known as\u00a0<\/span><span>Kerem Shalom,<\/span>\u00a0in southern Gaza said six trucks monitored by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/un.html\">United Nations<\/a> and carrying 450,000 litres of fuel crossed there on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;The Qatari fuel to the Gaza Strip&#8217;s power plant today is aimed at partially improving electricity (supply) in Gaza,&#8221; Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem told AFP news agency.<\/p>\n<p>The delivery could help ease <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/04\/gaza-protest-latest-updates-180406092506561.html\">months of protests<\/a> and clashes along the border between Israel and Hamas-run Gaza, which has been under a crippling Israeli and Egyptian blockade for more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p>The blockade has deprived the strip&#8217;s roughly two million inhabitants of several vital commodities, including food, fuel and medicine.<\/p>\n<p>The trucks that entered Gaza brought the first delivery of a $60m fuel donation by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/qatar.html\">Qatar<\/a> meant to provide the power plant with enough fuel to operate for six months, local sources said.<\/p>\n<p>For months, Gazans have been receiving only four hours of mains electricity a day on average.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for the Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah, who is based in the Israeli-occupied <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/occupied-west-bank.html\">West Bank<\/a>, voiced disapproval of the fuel delivery.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Any international financial aid to the Gaza Strip should be through, or with the coordination of, the Palestinian government,&#8221; he said, in order &#8220;to preserve Palestinian unity&#8221; and to stop any plans to separate Gaza from the West Bank.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Tuesday Azzam al-Ahmad, a senior official close to Palestinian President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/focus\/2009\/11\/2009115154854751132.html\">Mahmoud Abbas<\/a>, threatened retaliatory measures if the fuel deliveries continued.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>&#8216;Humanitarian disaster&#8217;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The United Nations has warned that Israel&#8217;s 11-year blockade of the strip has resulted in a &#8220;catastrophic&#8221; humanitarian situation.<\/p>\n<p>Under the UN-brokered deal, Qatar pays for the fuel which is then delivered through Israel with United Nations monitoring, a diplomatic source said.<\/p>\n<p>A Qatari official, speaking to Reuters news agency on Sunday, said Doha planned to help with Gaza&#8217;s power crisis &#8220;at the request of donor states in the UN, to prevent an escalation of the existing humanitarian disaster&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Israel&#8217;s energy minister, Yuval Steinitz, told Reuters on Monday that Qatar &#8220;was trying to help&#8221;
