A Palestinian teenager was killed by an Israeli gas canister that was fired at a protest along the enclave’s northern border with Israel,\u00a0Gaza<\/a>‘s health authorities said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ministry spokesper Ashraf al-Qidra said that Ahmed Abu Habel, 15, died on Wednesday when the tear gas canister hit him in the head near a checkpoint between Israel and the Gaza Strip.<\/span><\/p>\n

Twenty-four others were injured, al-Qidra added.<\/span><\/p>\n

Israel’s military did not comment on the specific incident but a spokesperson told AFP news agency that soldiers had “fired live rounds in accordance with the rules of engagement” as protesters massed along the border.<\/span><\/p>\n

The incident follows months of demonstrations by Gazans along the border fence with Israel demanding their right to their ancestral lands from which they were expelled 70 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Great March of Return<\/a>\u00a0rallies culminated on May 15 to mark what Palestinians refer to as the Nakba, or Catastrophe – a reference to the forced removal of 750,000 Palestinians from their homes and villages to clear the way for Israel’s establishment in 1948.<\/p>\n

So far, more than 195 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, one of the world’s most densely populated places on earth. <\/span><\/p>\n

One Israeli soldier has been killed since the protests began on March 30.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last Friday, seven protesters were killed by Israeli gunfire, including a 12 and 14-year-old. <\/span><\/p>\n

This was the bloodiest day since the May 14 protests when more than 60 Palestinians were killed in Gaza during protests against the inauguration of the US embassy in Jerusalem.<\/span><\/p>\n
